What does it mean when you say "and that's all"?

When I go through a drive thru, I give my order, and then say that is all. Meaning my order is finished, you can give me my total and tell me to go to window 1. 9 times out of ten the order taker will ask me f that is all? Or, if I would like cookies, etc. I find this mildly irritating, but I say nothing other than no I don't care for cookies...or yes my order is finished. Does this ever happen to you?

I could be wrong, but I believe they are instructed to ask that question. They are probably just so used to asking it for ALL orders, that it doesn't cross their minds to not ask it. Plus, if they are being recorded and they don't ask it they probably get in trouble.

I know - it doesn't make sense, but then a lot of things don't make sense, eh?

They read scripts. I'm pretty sure they want to upsell everyone and won't take no for an answer the first time!

Yes, I think chickenbutt and terrier are correct. Their speech is scripted and they are told to ask what they do. In many businesses, there are "secret shoppers" or "secret diners" who go undercover to evaluate their employees' performances. The workers are not trying to be annoying, they are trying to keep their jobs.

I think it's just that they say it so often, they don't even realize what they are saying ... it's automatic.

In Los Angeles county, they no longer provide shopping bags free ..... but you can buy them if you didn't bring your reusable bags with you.

I place my groceries on the conveyor belt, put my shopping bags on top of my items, and the cashiers still say "Would you like to buy a bag?".

IMO, it's automatic ....

They would probably prefer NOT to have to ask you again...they are graded on how many seconds it takes to deliver an order.

I had a friend who was a manager at Taco Bell - he said the pressure is actually terrible. He had been a live TV producer before that and said that was calm compared to the pressure to produce and follow scripts at fast food places!

This bothers DH too, but I've told him that they are required to ask and to always answer and say thank you. He hates it, but I'm sure they hate having to always remember to ask. They are just trying to make more sales and do their job.

This is kind of of related...but you have to stretch it a bit. I think we as a nation have a very short attention spans. And I really think "we" are not paying attention, we are kind of on an automatic pilot of sorts. We only hear part of what is said to us.

Related but not really. I was looking at a couple of old "1960's" Life magazines yesterday and the thing that really struck me was how long the ads were and how much you really had to read to get the message. Those ads would not work today because we have short attention spans.

I notice that as well! Copywriting was as much a science as it was an art in earlier decades. We are much more visual now and the need is to get all of the touch points covered in as short a time as possible to accommodate the public's short attention spans.

Yes, it probably becomes automatic. They have hundreds/thousands of customers each day, and they just recite their scripted and automatic last sentence(s). It seems to me......

Exactly what I think. In addition, it clarifies that the customer has nothing more to add to the order. It's not something that's ever bothered me.

Reminds me of when I used to live close to a Burger King and once in a blue moon I'd go to the drive thru and order a Whopper Junior. I'd say 'whopper junior with lettuce and pickles only please" . The person would always ask if I wanted cheese on it!!! First of all, I said "only" and second I didn't order a cheeseburger. Finally I started saying "whopper junior and ALL i want on it is pickles and lettuce." That usually did the trick. Usually.

I noticed that almost every time I go to the supermarket and ask for paper bags, they pick up numerous items and ask if I want it bagged. After several times I just want to yell " of course I want everything bagged!!"
