This makes me crazy

When someone famous has something happen in their lives, it is reported like it's something different than many of the rest of us have been through.

A current example is reporting how difficult it is for Melissa Rivers having to make decisions about her mother. YES, it is very difficult. Ask the rest of us who have had to agonize over what to do! And I am not sure Melissa Rivers has even talked publicly about it!! I remember like it was yesterday sitting the the ICU waiting room having the discussion about my mother with my dad and brother. I remember telling the doctor when he came in. Since I am an RN, I have been the spokesperson for all this. It was HE LL.

I remember years ago a well known person turning 50 - like it was the first time it happened. Menopause, anyone?

How about when a famous person has a baby? It is the first time someone experienced childbirth and caring for a baby, right?

Wonder if others have felt this way too!!

I do not feel the seem about all famous people, though not wishing anything wrong to come for them either.

Some famous people's loss or illness hit us more then others maybe due to an event in our lives, pleasure they gave us etc.

Of course I feel the same about regular people as well...just do not hear about their problems.

I feel for anyone in this position.....yes Melissa is no different than us ordinary folks...but because of thier celeb status it does bring this to the forefront and perhaps increase awareness about living wills/advanced directives.

Hyacinth, I think it sounds like this news is bringing back your pain about your mother.

It is only natural that famous people get attention for these types of things. That's just how celebrity works.

We do often read about ordinary people and their struggles as well.

They are public people and the public almost demands that they (we) need to know every detail of their lives, so they report it. Even when there is nothing to report. People forget that we all go through the same things, but we need to "hear" about it when it's a public figure. DH feels the way you do.

Be thankful you did not have to go thru a horrible tragedy or face something like this in the public eye.

It was hard enough to do for my family without being talked about all over the news and web.

No, it doesn't bother me, in the least. If John Q Public had no interest in these events, they wouldn't be reported.

What would bother me, a great deal, is being the celebrity, going through, what should be private moments, in a fishbowl. Knowing that everything I did, every response I had, was being watched and judged, by millions of total strangers. Knowing that if I'm human and don't handle everything perfectly, it will reflect badly, not only on me, but, on my family. We love to set up our celebrities, but, sometimes, we love even more, to judge them and tear them down.

Yes, these people choose careers in the public, knowing the downside is a loss of privacy. But, just as most of us, hopefully chose our careers, because we were strongly drawn to them, so, I'm guessing did they. If your heart was with performing, you probably would not find much happiness as an accountant.

Fame and fortune can bring great rewards, but, I would think, especially at times, it can also be a very difficult life.

and btw: not sure why somebody should be thankful that their lives are not all over the news when tragedy strikes; tragedy is tragedy and never diminished by whether or not it's in the news.

I think I understand what you're saying, hyacinth003. At every cough, sneeze and hiccup, celebrities get praise and attention for everything they do, whether good or bad, and people who aren't famous barely get a second mention. (to all Joan Rivers fans or fans of any other celebrity, I promise that wasn't a slam to the celebrity that you like)

Anyway, I'm very sorry for the loss of you mother, hyacinth003. Just because your mom wasn't a celebrity, doesn't mean she wasn't important.

I meant because you would have to deal with it in a very public way. All the time, not privately.

I would hate that. And yes, certain tragedies strike a certain cord in most of us, but I would not want to have it be headline news and web fodder.

hyacinth...I was thinking something similar. The recent interviews with the two medical people (a doctor and nurse?) who came back to the US and survived ebola.

What's the point of the interviews? So we can "oh!" and "aww" at what they say?

They were infected, they recovered...end of story...IMO.

Almost EVERYBODY gets 15 minutes of fame these days...most for no reason at all.

Hyacinth, I am with you on this one. People go through this every day but we just dont hear about it.
