I have tinnitus and I wear hearing aids. They help to mask the ringing during the day, but at bedtime I have to have the tv on in order to fall asleep. If I'm up during the night and return to bed before DH has to get up, he says I can turn the tv on but I don't really want to do that, so I'll lay there and thy thinking about other things; prayer, sing a song in my head, redecorating plans, think about something I read during the day. I'd be interested to learn more about this oil treatment.

I have just heard that people are seeing improvement with tinnitus by rubbing some type of essential oil on the back of their ears. Does anyone know about this and have actually experienced positive results by doing this? Which oil should be used?

Thank you for your help--I'm so tired of the noise!

I looked it up - and here is what I found: My husband has this, too.

Lavender

Lavender has a sweet floral fragrance and is used to treat conditions such as congestion, while helping repair cells and encourage regeneration. Lavender has a strong restorative action as well as being a relaxant. The soothing, tranquilizing and calming qualities of lavender are important in the essential oil blend to treat tinnitus.

Read more : http://www.ehow.com/about_5421559_essential-oils-use-tinnitus.html

I was diagnosed with tinnitus earlier this year after a severe ear infection in my right ear. My ENT doctor told me there is no cure for tinnitus and it is something I must learn to live with. I must say -- easy to say, very hard to do. I can usually tolerate the ear noises during the day but it's horrible at night, sometimes buzzing, other times ringing or roaring. It always seems much louder at night making it difficult to fall asleep and stay asleep.

I'll check gloriajean's website on lavender's essential oils. It may not help but I don't think it would hurt.

I have tinnitus in one ear and hyperacusis (sensitivity to loud noise) in the other, most likely from injury to my ear from loud noise. During the day it's not really problematic but at night when I get into bed, the tinnitus is very apparent. Still, I manage to fall asleep. I would suggest to those who have more severe tinnitus getting a white noise machine that has a variety of soothing sounds on it.

As far as essential oils I strongly urge everyone to do their research before trying this. I would never rely on a testimonial and unfortunately, that's all I seem to see on-line aside from articles by aromatherapists. And who knows if they are even licensed. I came across the following article that seems to provide more info than others but I haven't seen the use of essential oils backed up by any reputable medical source.

http://naturesgiftaromatherapy.blogspot.com/2012/01/ringing-in-ears-tinnitus.html

Note that the article suggests using a blend of essential oils, not just one. These oils need a certain dilution. You need a carrier oil. Would you feel comfortable mixing up your own concoction? Also note that each essential oil has its own effects. If Cypress is a "potent vasoconstrictor", do you know if this is contraindicated for any medical condition you have or any medication you are currently taking? Also, I would never, ever put oils in my ear!

My point being there is a lot more to essential oil therapy than just taking someone's say-so or personal experience. It could wind up causing more problems than not. Research it! Talk to your doctor.

Ugh! Of all things it would have to be lavender? That scent gags me. But, seriously, I don't think there is a fix. I have severe tinnitus and you just have to get used to it for the most part. Mine is on 24/7 - sometimes it's not bad but sometimes I go for weeks with it so loud I want to shove a pencil through my head.

Hearing aids sound like a good idea. When I'm using earbuds or headphones it is less intrusive too.

I firmly believe tinnitus is permanent. My husband and many thousands of men and women have a service connected disability which includes tinnitus. I do not think the US Government would be paying millions of dollars in service connected claims to veterans if tinnitus could be cured by any essential oil.

I have had tinnitus for about 30 years. Have not tried any alternative treatments. At first it was hard to get used to, but I have learned to "hear over" it. If I don't think about it, it is easier to ignore. If I really listen to it, it would drive me crazy!
