Skunk'ed!

Good morning. It is 1:30am. I just let my furbaby outside to go potty for the night. She charged the fence in seconds!.... ran right into a SKUNK and got SPRAYED! I tried to wash her face to get anything out of her eyes. Is there anything else I can do to make her comfortable?. Guess I will be finding a place to get her a "skunk bath in a few hours!

Oh gees ..... well supposedly tomato juice breaks down the scent ..... I'm sure there will be other answers.

I figured someone besides me is up and was hoping to get some ideas. I saw my Brindal laying down on the floor in the hallway. At least she is resting, and not on the furniture right now!. I have never taken any of my furbabies for a professional bath before. I have always done them at home. This is too much for me to handle by myself. I am still recovering from a recent shoulder surgery!

we've used tomato juice and dog shampoo---either wash her collar or (our suggestion) throw it away----it takes time---

Tomato juice does absolutely nothing for skunk odor. The best thing I've found is a product called Skunk Out. Since it's an emergency, look online for a formula using Dawn detergent; it's supposed to be effective.

In the plastic container, combine 1 quart hydrogen peroxide, 1/4 cup baking soda and 1 to 2 teaspoons of liquid soap. Add lukewarm water if needed (for larger dogs). Mix ingredients well. The solution will fizz, as a chemical reaction is occurring. Use immediately - do not store. Do not soak your dog with water prior to bathing. Promptly begin cleansing the affected areas thoroughly, massaging the solution deep into your dog's coat. You may wish to use a sponge or washcloth. Avoid getting the solution in the eyes, ears or mouth. Allow the solution to remain on your dog for at least five minutes (longer if strong odor persists). Rinse your dog well with lukewarm water. Repeat steps 3-5 as necessary until odor is gone. Dry your dog well and give her a treat!

I think I would eat the treat and take the dog to a groomer ASAP. How could this work in an emergency???? By the time its all done, the whole house will smell of skunk, wouldn't it????

I feel you pain. We had an (unusual) almost all white cocker spaniel that got skunked one night. We tried the tomato juice remedy and ended up with a pink dog that smelled like skunky tomato juice. ()

Early the next morning was was knocking on the groomer's door. She worked miracles but warned me, for the next several months, every time the dog got wet, she'd smell like skunk.

And, SHE DID!

You can do it outside but regardless of what you do, the dog is going to carry the smell for a month or two to some degree. You pet the dog, your hand will smell skunky. The groomers use Skunk Off like I mentioned. I keep a big bottle on hand.

I read where Dawn dish detergent is good for that.
