Hi everyone!

I just read The Winter People recommended by lolakimono and I loved it!! I thought it was a good creepy read and wanted some more ideas for ghost stories. I'm not into gore, I just like a good story that keeps that creepy, eerie, mysterious feeling throughout. Anyone care to share some good scary reads?

Thanks!

I love ghost stories. I'm sure more will come to me, I've read so many wonderful ones.

"The Supernaturals" by David Goleman. Best I've read in years.

"The Thirteenth Tale" by Diane Setterfield

"Her Fearful Symmetry" by Audrey Niffenegger

"The Seance" by John Harwood. A little too long but pretty good.

All of M.R. James's short stories.

"Summer of Night" by Dan Simmons

"Haunted" by James Herbert (but only if you've never seen the movie)

* * *

I am currently reading "Help for the Haunted" by John Searles. It is not as scary as I would like but it is interesting. It's fiction about the couple featured in "The Conjuring" and the doll (Penny here, Annabelle in real life, and the doll is getting her own movie soon called "Annabelle") is in the book. I'm not done yet so I don't know if the ending will be supernatural or not. The story is plodding much of the time. But I'm not sorry I read it.

* * *

Here are a couple that look good to me, that I have saved at Amazon for future reading:

"Floating Staircase" by Ronald Malfi

"Dark Inspiration" by Russell James

"H*** [rhymes with dell] House" by Richard Matheson

"No Doors, No Windows" by Joe Schreiber

"The Haunting Season" by Michelle Muto

and now I've added "The Winter People", so thank you Tsukiko!!!

WOW LoriLori!!! Thanks so much for the suggestions. I will go to Amazon tonight and sample these on my Kindle.

I read The Thirteenth Tale and Her Fearful Symmetry and loved them. I think ghost stories are my favorite genre (aside from cozy mysteries) but it's just so hard to find a good one.

Thanks again!

Can't recommend "Help for the Haunted." It had a ridiculous twist at the end supernatural or not I won't say, but it doesn't really matter because it left me feeling I wasted my time reading it.

Also there's the iconic "House of Leaves" by Mark Danielewski. It's on my bookshelf now. I'm a fairly slow reader and it will take a big investment of my time but I think I'll finally read it this fall around Halloween.

I like two cozy mystery writers who both have ghosts in them. Rose Pressey writes the Haunted Renovation mystery series and Mary Stanton's Beaufort & Company series. The first book in Stanton's series is Defending Angels and I really enjoy this series. Its not scary at all but a lawyer who helps dead people solve mysteries in beautiful Savannah, GA is a lot of fun.

I don't get to read much, and lately stick to more action filled books. But, when I was younger (high schoolish and younger, I guess), I did used to read more supernatural books and this thread reminded me of how much I enjoyed the genre. I always love a good ghost story, but didn't consider looking any up (Kind of unrelated, I even love when it's Halloween and some of the television shows would have special theme episodes.)

Bigtime recommendation:

"Naomi's Room" by Jonathan Aycliffe.

One of the scariest, and most eerie, books I've ever read. Don't know why it's not more well known (it's not even available as an ebook). It ought to be a classic. IMO better and scarier than "The Woman in Black." Five stars.
