The stable owners, where I boarded my horse, owned one. Nice looking dog, protective, but not really friendly. He was stand- offish and the owners didn't really let him interact with boarders because they weren't sure how he would always react. I don't remember him barking and there was lots of activity to bark at. I was interested in getting one but the stable owner suggested I wait until my children were bigger. She said that RRidgebacks weren't known for being patient with kids.

Hopefully someone that owns one will have another perspective.

They are bred to be "lion hunters" according to my former neighbor who had one.. Theirs was very friendly, though not like lapdog friendly... They are lean, tough and loyal...

I'm not an owner, but someone had one in the town where I used to work and I often saw her walking it at lunchtime. Hers was a big ol' love-muffin. I don't know if it was different with kids.

I don't personally own one but have done pet sitting for one. I NEVER judge a dog by breed before meeting them and always go in with a positive attitude!

All I can say (and I've watched her on several occasions) is that she's the SWEETEST most LOVING dog you can find! She has a shepherd mix 'brother' and 2 cat 'sisters' lol and no one was out for blood for the other. And myself coming in as a stranger to her, she showed absolutely NO aggression towards me, and never has!!

I stand firm by dogs behaving or having temperaments based on how they were raised.

I don't pre-judge people and I don't pre-judge animals!

Our neighbors in Georgia had one and he was an amazing dog! They had two young daughters and he was wonderful with them.

We have a Doberman/Lab mix and the two of them were best buds! They played rough, but they are both big, strong boys and enjoyed the tussles.

He was definitely stubborn and would take the pain of breaching the Invisible Fence they had around their yard when he'd see us outside. There was no stopping him from playing with his buddy! lol

I think they would do best in a home with experienced dog owners, just like some other breeds like German Shepherds, Dobermans, Rotties, etc., because I agree that the owners greatly shape the future personality of their dogs.

They are a wonderful breed. I use to own one and had several friends that did. Ours died of old age, I wouldn't hesitate getting another.
