Variety and a few other sources are saying it was suicide, that he had been battling depression lately.

Lately? He had been battling it for decades.

Robin Williams was a local boy, local family.

He was a man about town, we'd see him everywhere, and he always had a smile and a joke for anyone who said hello.

He was out riding his bike several times when I was doing the same. We'd smile and nod. We lived not far from each other.

He used to have a wonderful house in the Sea Cliff area of town, adjacent to the SF Richmond district. He was known for throwing fabulous Halloween parties for kids, any kids who showed up at his doorstep. Fully decorated, out onto the lawn, and lots of goodies. We took our daughter there for trick or treat.

I'm heartbroken

I want to add... Robin Williams was always there when there was a need to raise money for others. He was kind and generous.

I read that in the past too Noel, we lost a great one today. I cant even think of words right now, I am just shocked. I never realized he was fighting those demons, I feel so bad for him. And his family...

We did lose a great one, he was brilliant.

I'm shocked, too. Yours was the first post about it that I saw. It was like a kick in the gut, and that's not a common reaction for me. I think this entire area was always so proud of him.

Noel I was going to say I feel like someone kicked me in the throat, I can hardly swallow but then I didnt want to sound callous or whatever. You know how that goes here.

Croemer, this is horrible news, my heart is broken for him, I never knew he was in so much pain.

I'm shocked, too. Yours was the first post about it that I saw. It was like a kick in the gut, and that's not a common reaction for me. I think this entire area was always so proud of him.

As they should be. He held his suffering inside and brought joy to all he came in contact with. His depression was hidden, but consumed him. It's an illness that there is no cure for. He is at rest now. Remember him in the way he wanted to be remembered.

I can not believe that it may have been suicide...how sad SeaGal. He entertained so many. It seems so many comedians suffer from depression.

Croemer, I wonder if they have done an autopsy yet, I wish we could learn it wasnt suicide after all. I know thats a stretch but he did work himself up quite a bit, you could wonder if his heart just gave out.

I guess I just dont want to think he was so dispondant in his life...

eta~ yes, I have heard people turn to comedy to cover their pain, that is so sad to me, so sad.

I hear ya. I thought many years ago he seemed sad....he was ON so much as though he was compensating for something. It was just a feeling I had. So tragic and I feel so bad for his kids.
