I use a star rating system for all the books I've read.

1 star: Don't bother

2 star: It was okay

3 star: It was pretty good

4 star: It was very good

5 star: It was excellent and I want everyone I know to read it...immediately!

Do you have your own book rating system?

I try to but I don't have anything definite. I yours because sometimes if you rate a book 3 stars it is almost like you don't like it when I don't think that is true.

I don't have a system, but to me it seems like rating a book a 3 means it's just average. I know that should be 2.5 on a 5 point system, but in my mind if I can't rate a book at least 3.5 it means I didn't like it all that much. I must have a more narrow view of what appeals to me.

It never occurred to me to rate the books I've read. I have't even kept a list. I've liked books but see flaws and blame the writer/editor especially when the book has won an award that I feel is undeserved. But then, like anything else, a lot depends on what the thing or person is up against. If the competition is low grade a rather good becomes a great.

My DH would say that I have a rating system for just about everything! As in, "I would give that bagel a 7", "that coffee was a 10, dontcha think?", etc., etc. And in my now defunct book club, we would rate each book and the host would come up with a group rating. So, yes, I tend to do this in my mind A LOT, and have experience doing it within a group. I don't physically write down a rating for each book I read, but if a friend asks about a title I'm reading I can easily and quickly give it a numeric rating between 0-10, 10 being excellent.

No, why would I? Reading is entertainment for me, so I don't speed read (as someone on a book thread or other thread suggested) or keep records on any kind...aside from posting here. A rating system? I've already read a book so I don't need to rate it for myself. And any rating I gave a book would be subjective and should be meaningless to anyone else. There are many books I have NOT read that I would have read if others' opinions mattered to me.

Yes. I started late, but have kept records for 4 years using name, author, book or Kindle, a brief description and a number rating (1-5) with comments. It is a good way to remember what I have read since I read a lot. I also wish I had started young, but doubt I would have.

cookie-I keep a list of TBR (to be read) books in my phone. If I'm reading something else and a new book is mentioned that I'm interested in I can easily jot it down (so-to-speak) in my phone. I also keep a list of what I've read. Partially b/c I was in a book club for a bunch of years and we referred to these lists a lot. Also, I find that if you read a lot, sometimes you forget, at least initially, if you've read something or not.

And btw, I LOVED reading that you can look at your list and see that you have 800 books on it. Seems like a nice little accomplishment. A personal one, but an accomplishment nonetheless. I can look back in my phone a few years OR in a little journal I kept years before the phone and see how many books I was reading, on average, in any given year. Interesting to look and see how certain life events or other stuff (having children, for instance) affected how much I was reading.
