topic Drop-in electric range? in Community Chat

I have a JennAire drop-in range. I opted for it when we built our house 16 years ago because one side has a grill. Well, I never used that side much because it was just sooo hot AND awful to keep clean. I checked on replacing that element with a "burner" side, but it was going to be over $400 back several years ago. So, I bought a cover for that side and used only the other side....most often the largest burner. The other night I was cooking taco meat when the burner just died.....out of the blue. I suppose the heating element burned out. I would LOVE to have a gas stove, but assume I will just replace it with another electric drop-in. Do any of you have a similar model that you would recommend? I use the oven a lot and wonder about the "two oven" style where there is a small oven over the regular oven. Any thoughts? TIA Demitra

I think GE still makes one. Oh but I guess there isn't ""GE"" anymore. Maybe if you google ""drop-in range"".

If you have an electric range right now, unless you want to pull a permit and pay a plumber to hook into your gas hot water heater and run a line to the range area......followed by the dry wall guys and a painter........you're better off sticking with electric.

As to a drop in, that is one you're better off changing out to a slide in.......A drop in won't allow you to have a double oven, simply because you have that piece of cabinet under the range......that area would be where a second oven would be........now the good news.... it's easy to convert from a drop in to a slide in........that wooden apron piece comes right off........and as long as you're buying the same wide range as the oven was, it's an easy conversion..........take the apron off and slide in the new range.

Also this will help you keep your costs down..........drop in ranges are dated, you won't find very many models out there because it was the appliance of the 80's........slide ins have replaced drop ins and since they have and the number of models out there, the cost will be much better then a drop in...........also more styles to choose from................................raven

Thank you for the updated information, RB! I will certainly look into slide-ins. I have already casually googled drop-ins and was surprised by the limited number available. Now, thanks to you, I understand why. Again, thanks. Demitra

Sorry, what's the difference between a drop-in and a slide-in? I think maybe we had a slide-in.
