What is a dump cake?

I was watching the QVC microwave cooking show and one of the dishes the chef prepared was a dump cake?. It was more of a cobbler, but looked very good. What is a dump cake? Are they good?

I haven't made one, but I have copied several recipes from eople on the Recipe board. Here's one of them. I can't remember the person's name that posted it, though..

APPLE DUMP CAKE

Layer your apple slices (or other fruit) at the bottom of a pan that has been coated with non-stick spray.

Sprinkle on boxed cake mix.

Melt an entire stick of butter.

Pour butter over the fruit and dry cake mix.

Bake at 350* for approximately 35-45 minutes -- it's done when it is nice and bubbly.

I've seen the infomercial for Dump Cake cookbooks. The idea is you just dump all the ingredients into a pan and cook it. No muss, no fuss.

They are the best. Usually they start with fruit on bottom, then are topped with dry cake mix, and some melted butter is poured on top before baking.

LIVED on Dump Cake in college. Too much sugar, butter, salt, artificial flavorings- DELICIOUS!!!!!!!!!!!

THANKS for all your replies. It sounds very easy. So, there's no stirring? ...just dump it all together.

OK, I just looked online and I see it's EVERYWHERE. There are commercials on youtube tons of other citations. I guess I missed the trend. lol

Dump Cake: This is my sister's recipe.

1 jar pie filling
1 (20 oz) can crushed pineapple
1 stick butter or margarine
1 pack chopped walnuts
1 small pack coconut (if desired)
1 box yellow cake (Pillsbury Plus)
In a 9x12 inch pan, put pie filling on bottom,
then layer pineapple, cake mix
and butter in small pats,
nuts and then coconut.
Bake at 350 degrees for 1 hour

That makes sense. THANKS. I'll bet my DH would like it and it sounds easy enough.

On the commercial (not infomercial), regular commercial on tv the Dump Cake gal shows putting your fruit on bottom of 9 x 13 pan, adding the white cake mix then adding a can of soda, 7 up or like, bake as instructed on cake mix box. No butter added in this recipe she shows.

I'm sure she must have greased the pan?

DHs scout troop always made a dump cake over an open fire when they went camping. Their recipe:

one can of cherry or blueberry pie filling (or any other flavor)

one box of white or yellow cake mix

1 stick of butter cut into small pieces

Using a Dutch Oven place pie filling in oven, dump cake mix over pie filling, spread out but do not mix together, add butter in small pieces over top of the cake mix. Bake for about 45 to 50 minutes.

The kids loved this and always had to have it at least one or two nights during the camping trip.

A gooey butter cake requires a mixer..typically, a dump cake foes not...

My sister used to make a dump cake all the time using cherry pie filling and pineapple then the dry cake mix and melted butter. No coconut and no nuts involved.

It was fantastic. We haven't had one in years.

My fave is a cherry pineapple one..in a 9x 13 pan, dump a can of cherry pie filing and a can of crushed pineapple ( stir to mix) sprinkle a yellow or white cake mix over the top, sprinkle either a cup of chopped walnuts or pecans, drizzle with 1 stick melted butter...bake @ 350 for 35-40 minutes...
