Downs Twin Left With Surrogate

So an Australian couple hired a surrogate in Thailand to carry their baby. It was discovered during the pregnancy that she was carrying twins and one of them had Downs. The couple wanted the Downs twin to be aborted. When the surrogate did not have Downs boy baby aborted, the couple took home the unimpaired baby girl but left the baby boy in Thailand with the surrogate who has vowed to raise the baby as her own. $200,000 has been donated by individuals to help the surrogate care for the child who has a heart ailment. I'm thinking maybe the Downs baby has ended up with the best parent.

What a tragic story. Thankfully, the surrogate wants the baby. I wonder whose egg was used?

If the surrogate did not want to abide by the contract, then I guess this was the best outcome for everyone.

Fathers egg and he is being checked out now by his country because he has a record for child abuse. If it's true the surragate mother has said she will take the baby girl back and raise her, too. He is 56 or so and says that it's not true.

Where is this surrogate getting the resources to contest guardianship?

So Thailand is worried about this one particular case? Considering the terrible track record they have with abused children, this strikes me as strange........

I would NEVER be arrogant enough to judge anyone in this situation. Some can, some can't. Doesn't make it right or wrong.

Agreed, not everyone is equipped to parent a special needs child.

What an awful mess. So it wasn't the Australian woman's egg? It sounded like the Thai woman is the actual bio mother, I'm glad she's getting donations to help raise the child. That kind of money will go a long way in Thailand.

I hope there are no extenuating problems for the boy, like heart trouble. I hope he has a wonderful life with the mother who loves him.

VCamp..... what a sad way to think about this..... many couples want children so badly.... and they use a surrogate .... it has been a win/win situation for many people.

People get upset when buyers only want pedigreed dogs...

Yet they think it's A-OK to contract with a woman in a foreign country, pay her for her eggs and then reject one of the children because it's not "perfect."

How miserable can people get?

There are plenty of already born children ready and waiting to be adopted. Maybe even some right there in Thailand. I bet they can even take an adoptable child for testing - to make sure they are getting a healthy child.

But no - the dad needed his own precious genes in the child...but it had better be perfect to boot!

Surrogate and gestational carriers aren't new and it's always been by contract.

Adopting a baby is also by contract.

I'm missing what the issue with that is.

Then perhaps they shouldn't have had any children because that is the chance you take.

Perhaps adopting a perfect child would have been the better route for them.
