To revisit the subject of funeral processions....

We are just home from the funeral of a dear family member. He was a retired police motorcycle officer and volunteer fireman so he got full honors. 20 police motorcycles escort for the funeral procession and at the church we drove under a bridge made by 2 ladder trucks touching their ladders together. They also had bag pipes playing and a bugle played taps, and an Army honor guard.He was a Viet nam Vet.

Anyway - we talked about if cars break into the procession on a previous thread. Today , at each side street one or two of the motorcycle cops would park across the street entrance so it was blocked and no one could have broken in. Then the remainder of the motorcycles were along side the cars in the procession - basically blocking it to prevent anyone being able to jump in. And we proceeded right through all red lights and stop signs. I don't know how many police escort a non police officers funeral but we certainly had sufficient amount today. BTW - just for the record - the police officers volunteer to do this for their brothers on their own time - this is no cost to the city.

Okay....police escort or not; I myself have never seen anyone break into a funeral procession. I really don't think it happens anywhere, not intentionally anway.

For a private citizen's funeral, you pay for a police escort. For my FIL's funeral, the distance from the church to the cemetery was under 10 miles. There was a $250 charge to have a police car lead the procession. In their town, a police car is a requirement.

We've had it happen twice. Once, the security came back and motioned for the driver to get out. The other time, we just let him ride along with us and my nephew made sure he did because he got in the other lane and blocked the car so that he had no choice but to go slowly down the road. Rather funny after it was over.

Several times while I was in a funeral procession, drivers have cut in intentionally right in front of me. And they did know it was a funeral procession because they had been waiting while the procession was going by. They apparently just couldn't wait any longer.

When my parents died 20+ years ago we did have a police car lead us through the city but that was all. I don't know if it was paid for because my parents had pre planned their funerals and paid for them long before.

I wonder if sometimes people just don't know that they have to wait until the entire procession has passed.

I've never seen people cut into a funeral procession. I'm sure it's happened though, intentionally or unintentionally

you have to add me to the list of never seeing anyone break into a funeral procession........here, as I'm sure in other areas of the country......you may not get respect all the time, but that is ONE time when ultimate respect is given........and that's a good thing.........................................raven

Apparently it must happen or the police who were escorting our funeral procession yesterday would not have pulled out of line to physically block the side streets to prevent it.

What I can't figure out is WHY anyone would want to break into a funeral procession - you drive really slowly, they aren't going to get anywhere fast, that's for sure.
