Selling on ebay and PayPal

I'm thinking about selling a few things on ebay. At this time, I do not have a bank account linked to PayPal. When I buy something, I use a credit card.

However, receiving money requires a bank account.

Considering online security ... should I open a separate checking account to link? I worry about linking my primary account, but maybe it's not an issue.

Not an issue - eBay & PayPal were not part of that mass virus a while ago. Very safe way to go. I just started selling on eBay (2x) & I've been a member since 1999. They make it very easy now, almost a step by step, follow the directions. If item you're selling is already on eBay, start w/the best formatted/well written item (even use their photos) & use it to create your own auction.

Really? I can use someone else's photos? I was wondering if I could even use QVC's item photos; I thought that was a no-no.

Ennui are you aware of e-bay's updated selling policy? Someone posted here earlier this week that e-bay now takes 10% of the final sale amount as well as 10% of what you charge for s/h.

I also was under the impression using someone else's description and/or photos was a no-no.

Yikes, KathyLFan, I hope you're not advising the OP to steal someone's auction, including their photos! That is against eBay's rules and if discovered, they will be thrown off eBay. Not a great way to start.

OP you can take your own photos, and you can create your own subject line and description without copying someone else's. Good luck!

In spite of the fees, it's still the best place to sell designer sterling jewelry like Ripka, Dawkins, and Bixby. Even for gold, my local jewelry consignment takes 40%, so ebay is still better.

I will not copy anyone's photos.

My basic question, though was about PayPal and bank accounts.

I've been buying and selling through ebay for years and my bank account that is linked to PayPal has never been compromised. But you should do what you feel most comfortable with. If you have any doubts open another account dedicated to ebay and PayPal.

Well, most checking accounts require minimum balances, and finding a free account is challenging. If it's not really necessary, I can save myself a little hassle.

I meant you can use that person's text to start your own item - many times the prior Seller is using Googled info (esp. w/book/record descriptions/reviews). And many photos are stock photos. I have copied others' photos w/no problems.

As a buyer on ebay I would be very upset if a seller posted stock or copied photos and said it was the item they were selling. Very dishonest IMHO.

You can receive money/payments directly into your paypal account and you can then spend it from there, either on ebay or other sites that accept paypal. Unless you are expecting to receive a lot of money from sales that you want to transfer into a bank account, there should be no need to link one.

I personally would never link anything to my bank account. Heck, I won't even use my debit card at stores; I use a credit card instead.

I wish there was a way to transfer the money to my credit card, but I guess I can't do that.

I've made selling on ebay and made a lucrative business out of it. You should take your own photos of the original items you have up for sale. Do some research on items like yours that have sold in the past. My Pay Pal account is set up with my business bank account (not my personal bank account).

keep it separated from your personal finances!

PayPal is a pain. They don't let gooooooo. I used it twice. Haven't in a couple of years, but they still send me an email with special offers every freakin' week. I just delete them!

Ennui, I've had my bank account linked to my Paypal account for years and have never had a moment's problem. I get my rebate from Mr. REBATES deposited in Paypal, then transfer it to my bank (or spend it).

I hope the various fees don't ruin the fun.

I did link a bank account to paypal, but it's not my primary account.

just because the other person is copying text doesn't mean it is ok for you to do the same thing. same thing with photo's! i saw a girl fix copycats good once - she somehow inserted HTML in her photo/text (HER own not copied) so that when someone stole it when they posted it instead of what she wrote it showed something like ""i have stolen this from another seller and should not be trusted!"" and the pic somehow showed the same thing!

Good luck. It is so much easier now. Years gone by checks, money orders, waiting for the checks to clear before shipping, manual writing emails, manual typing up shipping labels on computer, manual notifying buyer you'd shipped. So Much Easier.

I need to get busy and list some stuff myself. It is still time consuming taking photos and writing up the "auctions" but so much better than before.

I still buy more than I sell but I've done very well with some collectibles and personal collectibles as my tastes and collections have evolved over the years.
