So should the 3 year old have been supervised - or is it fine to leave him alone - since he's in his own yard and all?

(CNN) -- A 3-year-old boy in Southern California died Wednesday after he climbed into an unlocked car on a hot summer's day and was trapped, police said.

The toddler was playing alone in the front yard of his house in Sylmar while his parents were home when he got into the car and couldn't get out, said Officer Bruce Borihanh with the Los Angeles Police Department.

Police told CNN affiliate KABC that the boy's father woke from a nap and found the boy unresponsive. It was unclear how long the child was in the car, KABC reported.

The toddler was rushed to the hospital but was pronounced dead.

A three year old should be supervised at all times....period. A car is considered an attractive nuisance and should be locked so that kids can't get into it. Anyone with any sense should know both of these things. What a tragedy, and so unnecessary.

Yikes! I never let my son play in the front yard (no fence) even when I was there...he'd probably run. I always supervised him in our walled in backyard. What were these parents thinking, doing or not doing? What was so important that they couldn't watch him?

When my son was 3, we lived out in the country with quite a few acres of land. Even back then he was NEVER left alone for a second. What a senseless tragedy; that poor child struggling to get out - I can't even imagine. It used to be "take the doors off discarded refrigerators" and now more than ever we are seeing tragedy after tragedy involving hot cars. It's senseless, idiotic, and even worse the dad was napping???

The parents should be charged with neglect or negligence or something like that. Not becacuse the child was playing in his yard but because the had an unlocked car in the driveway. Duhhhhhhh Three year olds are attracted to cars like bees to pollen. Every parent who calls his or herself a parent knows enough to lock the car doors. Second, the child was 3....not 11. Three year olds are babies, very curious and they crave their independance. I never let my 3 year olds play in the yard alone. And if I went in for a few minutes, they came right along with me. Because those 3 year olds are quick! They can get into things that we never thought was possible. So, yeah. The negligence on two counts caused the death of that baby. I hope they can live with that. I couldn't.
