I haven't worn them since I was young.

When DD was a toddler, I got "Saltwater Sandals" - for kids only. You could wear them in the beach, and they were supportive. The company's out of business. When DS was young, I also got him supportive fisherman's sandals, with the toe enclosed. As a teenager, DD got her shoes from the Old Navy $5 sale each summer. She still wears those in the summer, and Uggs in the colder months, when she's not working of course. DS wears a leather brand from Kohl's, pretty much year round. He used to like Vans, but he hates any kind of boot!

I went barefoot most of the time until I grew up. My first year of teaching back in the States someone told me about Birkenstocks. I still live in them!

There is a thread about shoes and I was wondering about shoes for kids. My mom used to buy expensive shoes for my sis and me. Makes sense since the feet are getting bigger quickly as you grow up, etc. Now I see young children wearing flip-flops. If you have kids what is your take on this? Flip-flops aren't even good for adults. There is no support but I admit to wearing them!

My DD is almost 17 and she wears them. She wears what she thinks are cute, regardless of comfort. My feet are a mess from being in the military...combat boots, no support. She KNOWS the possible consequences but at 17, they know everything. Lol!

I don't know how young I was but I wore Buster Browns outside and slippers inside. So I guess slippers are sort of flip flops. I have extremely flat feet and perhaps the slippers or running around barefoot attributed to their downfall so to speak?. Didn't know about orthotics until I was an adult. They only fit in boots and sneakers.

I wear the thong style Birkenstock (Ariana sp?) it looks like a flip flop with 2 thin straps but my feet doesn't flop around.

To paraphrase the old saying, "There is a time and place for everything", even flip-flops. As parents we need to know if the time and place is appropriate. And with most teenagers, parents have to pick their battles, so getting a teenage girl to not wear flip-flops is a battle that probably not worth fighting, IMO. When children are younger it is easier to purchase appropriate shoes that the children will wear. I see many children wearing flip-flops but in today's economy flip-flops are affordable for summer compared to other types of shoes. Again, unless there are physical issues involved, I don't see a real issue......

grew up wearing them as did my DD. She started walking at 8 months but I did not put shoes on her until after her 1st birthday. I start wearing flip flops in March as long as it is a mild day out. And that continues until mid November. Albeit they are Ugh flip flops..

My daughter had a terrible plantars wart from wearing them constantly. At first we couldn't figure out what it was until it pained her so much we ended up at a podiatrist. He said the issue was from wearing flip flops and advised her to stop wearing them. He told us that your feet are exposed to so much dirt and so many germs while wearing them and they were the cause of this issue. I wore them for many years when I was younger but don't find them very comfortable anymore. There certainly are a lot of cute ones available.

And for those of you who believe only a supportive shoe is good- My Brother in Law, a Podiatrist for over 40 years, has always told me, "Shoes are at the root of most foot problems" ...I have n foot problems, no bunions no plantar fasciatis, I have broken a foot a couple of times, but no ortho type probs...
