On 7/28/2014 scotttie said:
On 7/28/2014 garmer said:
Scotty, second try. I've dabbled a bit with salt water tanks but, never tried breeding any marine animals. The tanks are gorgeous and, of course, expensive to start up.

I'd say my favorites are probably South American cichlids and African rift lake cichlids. I love Severums, Discus, Kribs, and every fish that lives in Lake Malawi, lol. Don't like the eye-biters, though. Eeeewwww. I've bred severums, discus, kribs, and some of the African mouth brooders...talk about cool. I've bred other species, too...even Bettas, lol.

My all time favorite fish was a wild caught male green severum. I got him at the pet shop I did business with, four of them actually, two males and two females. They were little babies, smaller than a quarter when I brought them home.

The one male would bite me, draw blood and everything if I dared to put my hand in the tank when he was caring for fry. He'd stare at me from one corner of the tank when he wanted feed, he would eat out of my hand...except when he had babies, lol. He had a personality, I swear. My dh thought I was crazy. Said to me one time, "I wish you cared as much about me as you do about those fish". LOL, poor baby.

Now that you have me thinking back, my list of favorites is getting longer and longer. As I said above, I could go on all night.

Money made selling fish always goes to more and fish and cool "stuff", at least for me it does. Oh well, at least my hobbie pays for itself. The stores I sell to prefer my stock to the farm raised, they know what they are getting, well cared for healthy quality fish. They aren't stressed by long distance travel, either. Only a short car ride from my house to the shop.

Scotty, do you keep fish?

garmer, no, I don't. The most experience I have had myself is with goldfish won as prizes at school events. Now that I am reading all about these fish, I don't think that's a very good way to treat the fish==as prizes.

Your hobby sounds very rewarding. I have always admired beautiful well cared for aquariums. My late stepfather used to keep one. Your story about the fish with personality made me smile. Stepdad had this really ugly fish (no idea what it was) but he named him "handsome" . My mom did not like that fish. She said he "didn't like her". Can you imagine?? I know you will understand since you talk about your fish having "personality" qualities. Anyway one time that fish jumped right out of his tank and landed on my mom and scared her half to death!!

Also, my British gramma used to have a small tank. I loved to hear her talk about her fish. With her accent the different types of fish names sounded musical.

I have really enjoyed reading about your fish hobby.

Thanks Scotty. I go on too long, I figured I was boring everybody. Your stepdad's fish, yep I get it. Your Mom was probably right, it probably didn't like her if she wasn't the one who fed it, LOL!

The British are known for some beautifully set up tanks. I get some magazines from GB, it's still a popular hobby over there.

I spend hours and hours fiddling with my tanks. Some would consider it a chore but it's a great stress eliminator for me. I get lost in my own happy world. Same with gardening...

I wish RRR success and hope this goes well for her. Sometimes it's the little things that make us happy, maybe this will be the beginning of a nice hobby for her.

Hello, RRR! I don't know anything about fish/fish bowls, but I'm thinking that all of the items you place into the bowl have to be special, non-toxic items. Just guessing, though, because now-a-days, almost nothing seems to be tested/checked for toxicity. I would visit a pet store and ask. Maybe some good suggestions are coming your way here.........have a nice afternoon!

Buy non-toxic aquarium decorations. That's what I would look for in fish/aquarium/pet stores. Anyway, good luck. The folks in the stores will help you out, just in case. I'm sure some posters will post ideas, etc. this afternoon!

Nothing toxic, no metal, nothing that has been washed with soap, nothing with sharp edges that the fish could cut himself on, nothing that the betta could get stuck in...you must be careful. Some rocks release toxins, so you have to know what kinds to use.

Bettas have a labyrinth organ so they need lots of open space at the surface to take in air with their mouths so, you can't have a bunch of stuff floating on the top.

It would be safer to get decorations at the pet store or, even yard sales that have things that were especially made for aquariums. You could also do some research online to give you ideas for what you could use that would be safe.

You can't use water straight from the tap, the chlorine kills fish. It must sit 24 hrs for the gas to escape or you can buy a chemical to remove the cl at the pet store or even grocery store or Walmart or somewhere like that.

If you never had fish before, you should read up on it a little. You could probably find some site online. Look for info geared towards beginners.

Sorry so long, I'm really into fish, lol.

I believe 'Aqua Plus Tap Water Conditioner' rings a bell, as I recall from years ago. Oh, BTW, you don't just drop a few drops in..........you have to drop the drops in the water and let sit BEFORE you add the fish..........Read and follow all directions.

Just be sure not to put 2 males together or they will fight to the death.

Here's a site with loads of information, pretty much everything you need to know.

They like a very small bowl/area, and just a few small rocks at the bottom. These fish like to be alone. Do not put 2 male betta together. I would use bottle water. Tap might have too much chemicals. You need to buy betta food.

I might take a look next time I'm in a pet shop.........maybe I'll make a plant terrarium with layers of various blue(s) colored rocks, a few aquarium decorations, a few mini-ferns, etc. Just another thought for myself.........

Fake fish. Why bother? If you don't want to take care of the fish don't get one. It might be good for RRR, give her something to do, a new hobby. She wants a cat but can't have one. This is at least something for her to take care of, feel needed. (there are, of course, fake cats)

Yes, it will be good for RRR! Very nice hobby, and easier than caring for a bird, or cat, or dog. I truly wasn't insinuating or hinting to RRR re: faux fish, etc. Just thought of it, and actually wondered whether or not something like that was even invented yet. Anyway, it's prompted me to visit a local pet store, see what's available regarding aquarium decorations, etc. I'm sure there are many beautiful decorations now-a-days.........

I had one in the office very small bowl. Then I put it in a vase for more space- stopped eating until I placed him back in the confined space. I bought another one and placed them side by side with a cardboard between them. I let them look at each other every do often. They do need warmth. I used a small bulb over their bowls day and night. Easy to clean. Tap water must be standing still over a period if time. I just had a jug on hand. No decorations in my bowls.
