Davenport??

I remember when I moved into my first house (renting) back in 2004. The owners were in their late 70s. The lady was going through the house with me. When we got to the living room she said, "And you can put your davenport there and your tv over there." I was like.... wha? LOL! I asked my mom later what she was talking about. Another "pocketbook" moment for me. Her mom used to call the sofa that.

I say couch or sofa.

Yes! This was the word I grew up with. Everyone said davenport.

I don't make fun of people who use words different from what I do; I think we all can learn from them. All over this country there are different dialects and different ways to describe things.... but we all have basically the same items and live more the same way than different.

Growing up, the deck off of our front room we called The Veranda..... I do not know where that came from as today I call them a deck......

It's a couch in my house.....

I looked up chesterfields. Our couch wasn't tufted like the ones in the pictures, so I don't know where they got that name from.

We say sofa, but my grandmother used to say divan. (pronounced dee-VON)

Yep.

Davenport was the name of a series of sofas made by the Massachusetts furniture manufacturer A. H. Davenport and Company, now defunct. Due to the popularity of the furniture at the time, the name davenport became a genericized trademark, like aspirin.

My family of Bostonians called it a divan (dye-van). the living room was the 'pah-lah' (parlor) or simply the front room. Front porch was called a 'piazza'.

I HAVE heart that one. I think one of my grandparents said that, but they pronounced it di-VAN.

I call it a sofa or couch. It was called davenport in past decades; haven't heard it called that in many years.
