Do you wear an apron? (I do!)

Saw this on Suzie Homemaker's Page:

"The History of 'APRONS'

I don't think our kids know what an apron is. The principle use of Grandma's apron was to protect the dress underneath because she only had a few. It was also because it was easier to wash aprons than dresses and aprons used less material. But along with that, it served as a potholder for removing hot pans from the oven.

It was wonderful for drying children's tears, and on occasion was even used for cleaning out dirty ears.

From the chicken coop, the apron was used for carrying eggs, fussy chicks, and sometimes half-hatched eggs to be finished in the warming oven.

When company came, those aprons were ideal hiding places for shy kids..

And when the weather was cold, Grandma wrapped it around her arms.

Those big old aprons wiped many a perspiring brow, bent over the hot wood stove.

Chips and kindling wood were brought into the kitchen in that apron.

From the garden, it carried all sorts of vegetables. After the peas had been shelled, it carried out the hulls.

In the fall, the apron was used to bring in apples that had fallen from the trees.

When unexpected company drove up the road, it was surprising how much furniture that old apron could dust in a matter of seconds.

When dinner was ready, Grandma walked out onto the porch, waved her apron, and the men folk knew it was time to come in from the fields to dinner.

It will be a long time before someone invents something that will replace that 'old-time apron' that served so many purposes.

Send this to those who would know (and love) the story about Grandma's aprons.

REMEMBER:

Grandma used to set her hot baked apple pies on the window sill to cool. Her granddaughters set theirs on the window sill to thaw.

They would go crazy now trying to figure out how many germs were on that apron.

I don't think I ever caught anything from an apron - but love..."

Sometimes, but not always. I love aprons, though, and have a collection--vintage and new.

Got that in an email a couple of years ago and love it!

I wear an apron sometimes. Depends on what and how I'm cooking...and wearing. And how much I'm going to be wiping my hands on my clothes.

No, I don't wear an apron. I do have several of the aprons worn by my Mom, including the one I made for her in HomeEc in 7th grade.

I wear an apron only when cooking the holiday meals and the big family get togethers......there's a lot of food being prepared on those dates........................raven

No. I have "house clothes" that I wear at home. I wear them cleaning and cooking. If they get a little schmutz on them, I don't mind. Into the laundry they go.

I don't have a problem with cooking...I never seem.to.have a lot of splatters or mess.

Rarely, very rarely and I don't know why not. I have several cute aprons and a couple of regular aprons. I have the cute ones hanging on a hook in the panty and the plain work aprons are folded in a drawer. I mostly wear them while cooking when I am entertaining. Unfortunately I don't entertain so much anymore. My grandmothers both wore and made their own aprons. My DMIL wears an apron when cooking.....she looks nice in it.

i do sometimes......just found some new ones called the SHAYPRON.....very cute style that looks like a dress. it is designed by debra murray (who used to work with wolfgang puck on hsn).

I do during holidays or if we have company. Marshalls and Pier 1 have some cute ones. I really do get food all over me when I'm cooking.

But if it's just DH or family, I usually wear a large Harley T-shirt. My Dad owned a Harley shop for 40 years and we have hundreds of them, literally....lol.

No, but I wear a bib when eating certain things depending on my upper body apparel.
