Does anyone else like butter tarts?

Our farmers market had a special kids section today. I bought some photo cards (I use them as thank you notes)...then I saw them - BUTTER TARTS!

I turned out the grandparents were from Toronto and grandma taught her granddaughter how to make them. I bought 6 minis with raisins - my son ate 4 in one sitting. He said they were as good as any he had eaten in Toronto.

Are they a specialty of any other area? Maybe near the northern border?

I haven't heard of them. I did look them up. they look and sound yummy. I can see why your son ate 4 in a sitting.

Used to eat 4 at a sitting, couldn't help myself. My mother in laws homemade, oh, I am just losing it here.

Hubs is heading up there for a visit, tarts are going on the list of things to bring back with him. ( we live in the US now)

These are really good....very homey butter tarts - not Tim Horton butter tarts (which will do in an emergency).

OK...I'm blaming you though!

The grandfather was really interesting. He played pee-wee hockey with Tim Horton back in the day. He used to go to grand opening of Toronto donut shops, back when Timmie was a Maple Leaf.

I had mentioned that my son was dual...he knew all about my ex too...said he was a "mucker and a grinder"...just like Don Cherry used to say!

It involves a butter crust, with a butter, sugar and raisin filling. It's Canadian.

Better that you don't know...they are addicting when made correctly!

My MIL is originally from Buffalo. These look like a cookie she used to make, but I don't think by the same name.

There is a lot of cross-border food exchanges between Buffalo & Canada. They also call them tassies.

Before 9/11, we thought nothing of walking over the bridge to eat at the Chinese restaurants in Canada...or to see the Falls from the Canadian side. College kids walked to Canadian bars - they serve 18 year olds. Now with all the Homeland Security issues, it's not as easy.

The very first American Tim Hortons were here too. They used to have butter tarts at the Buffalo locations, but they are just in Canada now.

Here! My father was from Hamilton and I grew up in Windsor. My grandmother taught me how to make butter tarts. It's just my brother and me now so I make them for him every Christmas. We love them and they're very easy to make.

Tim Horton is now a chain of donut shops on the East Coast - mostly in NY and PA. It was started by Tim Horton, a NHL defenseman who played most of his career for the Maple Leafs. He died in a horrible car crash when he was playing for the Buffalo Sabres.

A butter tart is a famous Canadian dessert.

Beaver tails are another great Canadian treat...anyone have a beaver tail before?
