I've used the XO spray and cleaner to start to neutralize the scent. It sounds like their may be a contest to reclaim that spot between the two cats. Then I get my carpet cleaner out and use the pet formula to scrub the entire area. I'll spray it for a few days after that.

I remember seeing a recipe for using white vinegar and something else but it just wasn't strong enough for my problem.

Good Luck.

I recently discovered that either one or both of my cats have been peeing behind a chair in a rarely used room. I am surprised by this as they both use they other litter boxes frequently. The carpet was soaked! I looked up on the internet how to clean the carpet and it seemed the same basic recipe was given (peroxide and dish soap followed by baking soda then vacuum). Let me tell you this did not work and nearly destroyed my vacuum! Any other tips? I think the carpet is a goner. BTW, I put a litterbox behind the chair and that is definitely the preferred place to "go!"

I've about given up trying to figure out why cats do what they do. Since we moved eight years ago, my boy has gone through stages where he didn't always use his litter box. He's an only cat now and has several boxes that are kept clean. He's been to the vet and he doesn't see anything medically wrong. I've tried all suggestions I've read here and nothing has helped.

His new behavior is #2 on the cellar floor. The other day I just finished scooping the boxes and was still in the cellar. Rick came down, walked right by the boxes and did #2 on the floor.

Sounds like the new box is working. I would shampoo the rug.

Thanks for the replies. I did try vinegar. The stains have lighten a bit but there is still a yellow cast and a smell. What stinkers (quite literally)! I think the urine may soaked all the way down through the carpet padding. Ugh.

Seriously, and speaking from past experience, the carpet is a goner. Nothing, and I mean nothing imo will help with cat p, especially if its been soaked a few times. If it's been soaked then its gotten to whatever sub floor you have. Cat p is just the worst. You can cut out and replace the area but they'll keep going back. Been there, done that, it is no fun. I'd replace with a flooring type material that can be wiped up easily.

You need to steam clean the carpet with Natures Miracle carpet cleaner. Remember that any liquids will spread through the pad under the carpet so you need to clean an area larger than the actual stain. You could also use Oxyclean in the carpet cleaner to get the stain up and then use natures miracle. The smell won't go away unless you get all of the area clean and the enzymes need time to do their job, it can take up to two weeks.

Is there a window by the chair in that room? Is it possible they are seeing other cats out that window and are marking the territory because of outside cats?

This is one of the reason's that I ripped out all my carpet and put in a floating vinyl floor through out the entire house. Highly recommend if you have pets.

When I had carpet and had to deal with piddle, I invested in a carpet cleaner and would use a mixture of hot water and vinegar to su*k up the urine. Once that was done, I would soak with a urine neutralizer.

I agree that the kitties are probably trying to remark the spot. Also, it is always a good idea to find out if they have some sort of infections - which can cause this behavior. Additionally, I have four boxes in my house which makes all the difference.

Good luck.
