Chicken Recall

Foster Farms has issued a voluntary recall of chicken with use by/freeze by dates of March 16-29. Plant numbers are P6137, P6137A, P7632. The information is on the price sticker.

If you purchase Foster Farm chicken from Costco, go check your freezer. I have the vacuum packed pouches of chicken tenderloins with one of the dates and plant numbers. I'll be calling Costco tomorrow to see how they are handling this.

We're four months past the use by/freeze by date of March 16 - 29.

I wouldn't trust any chicken that far past the date, no matter who sold it, or where it came from.

Mine was in the vacuum sealed pouches, Yuban, much like I use with the Food Saver. They are perfectly safe for 6 months or more in the freezer.

I put this out there because there are those of us who are Costco shoppers and do a lot of freezing.

This is the first article I've found that stated dates and listed plant numbers.

Glad it won't affect me. I don't eat chicken (allergic) and I rarely make it for DH and DS.

It's interesting that they are just now getting around to telling us.

Makes me long for farm days, when one raised their own chicken for eating.

Yuban, the Feds finally had confirmation Thursday and released the information immediately.

U.S. Department of Agriculture officials said late Thursday they had "conclusive evidence" linking Salmonella Heidelberg in Foster Farms chicken to an illness in someone who ate the meat. It's the first time the agency has been able to verify the pathogen in both chicken consumed and in a person with food poisoning.

The products were distributed in California, Hawaii, Washington, Arizona, Nevada, Idaho, Utah, Oregon and Alaska.

This is exactly why I have not eaten chicken for over a year now. Too many cases of salmonella poisoning that have been in the news.

Even ""organic"" chicken that you buy at Whole Foods or where ever is NO guarantee that it is 100% safe.

You want to make sure that it is safe? Raise it yourself and process it yourself. Then you can be sure that it's as safe as it can be.

Just checked the FF chicken thigh packets but can't find the date on it. We ate some last week.

Tansy, the information is on the price tag stuck to one of the pouches. Let me go check and see if anything is on an individual pouch.

eta: I found no identifying plants or dates on my remaining pouches. There is a phone number for Foster Farms and the hours of operation. I guess you could check their website.

I think the problem now that you are aware would be cross contamination and making sure the chicken is well cooked. I'm really careful when cooking chicken but my cross contamination skills are a little lacking.....it's the cutting board.

I must have used that packet already, kdgn. Now that my brain is functioning I know I bought this chicken maybe a month ago so I'm safe. Thanks for the warning.

Yuban, that is the package date. DD got one the other day from Costco with an April 1 date.

Considering most grocers have everyone's purchases in their databases, I think it's the least they could do. Several years ago Martins/Giant/Stop&Shop (in the Northeast) called me to tell me of a recall on meat; however, the info didn't match my purchase. I had no idea that they tracked this info (8 years ago)!

Since then, I got new grocery discount cards from my grocery stores (without filling out a new application with my info). I find it intrusive and I told them so.

Foster Farms lost my confidence when they found safety issues at the processing plant. They used to be a respected business and considered a better chicken product. I don't buy from them any longer.
