Earthquake in Arizona...

Right around 10 PM MST I felt that old familiar rocking and rolling that happens all to often in CA. Having lived in the Bay Area for almost 40 years, I got used to those weird movements, but was so sure I'd left that all behind when I moved to AZ 8 years ago. The quake is being reported as being near Lordsburg NM, but it was actually in eastern AZ...about 120 miles north of where I live. I got those same knots in my stomach, but all is okay now. Hope there were no injuries or damage closer to the epicenter.

All is well here today. The epicenter of the quake was about 100 miles north of us. It was widely felt, but there have been no reports of injuries or serious damage - good news! This was not near the current AZ wild fire - that is west & north of the quake area.

I didn't feel it!

Maybe it was a little too far away to be felt in the Phx area.

It was a 5.2 magnitude...rather sizable for an area that rarely gets quakes! There was at least one 3+ aftershock, which we didn't feel here.

I don't recall hearing reports of feeling it as far away as Phoenix.

It sure surprised me!! The 10 PM news was just about to start, and I felt that old familiar feeling....but didn't believe it was an earthquake at first. I thought maybe something was going on at the Army post that is here in town. They often have "noisy" training sessions that sometimes include explosions, etc.

But got confirmation of the quake about 10:15 from the news. My husband had gone to bed, and he thought I was imagining things! Hope there will be no more!!

I read it was on the Arizona/New Mexico state line. Glad to hear no damage or injuries.

There's been a huge increase in earthquakes since fracking began. No one wants to admit it, but it's just too much of a coincidence. The earthquake we had in New Jersey last year was minor, yet in all of my years (many!) it was the first earthquake I had ever felt.

There was talk that it was due to fracking in West Virginia, which was the epicenter. However, that talk died down very quickly.

Question is, are we willing to sacrifice "middle earth" stability for cleaner air? I don't know the answer to that.

There have actually been several in that location today. They map them between 40-50km NW of Lordsburg, New Mexico. So far there have been 3 quakes (3.5/3.4/3.6) There were also 3 yesterday just south of Mount Pleasant, Utah. Oklahoma has been getting a lot lately. They had 8 on Thursday, 4 on Friday and another 3 yesterday, most ranging in the 3.5 range, but one was a 4.0.

Oklahoma has had over 230 earthquakes that are 3.0 or higher so far this year, which is almost their entire total for last year. They say at one point they would only average 1 or 2 quakes each year, and are now averaging that daily. They are actually having much discussion about both fracking and water injection.

This site is kind of interesting, it updates on earthquakes happening around the world, tells the time they occurred and location, and gives their strength.

This new industry also provides much needed jobs. But again, it's the "risk vs. benefit" argument that we have to face in so many areas of our lives these days.

I've been reading reports on fracking lately, it's a lot worse than we knew. Water is being poisoned and some lakes are putting out methane.

This is really a bad situation that's largely being ignored, and it's only getting worse.

5.2 is a significant quake. I hope there wasn't much damage.

It's the same in PA and other states around the Marcellus shale deposit.

There is something seriously wrong with this industry when they lobby to PREVENT us from know what chemicals they are pumping into the ground and/or inspecting the run off and it's contents.

If it was that safe, they would be open to regulation, NOT squashing every inquiry.

We had a weather phoemohnia last week I'd never experienced before. It's called a ""Virgo bomb"". We get a lot of Virga because it's so dry. Virga is rain that evaporates before it reaches the ground and looks like black streaks in the sky. A bunch of complicated circumstances resulted in a boom and the house shook. The dogs raised their heads and the wind chimes outside rattled. Very wierd.

I live in Pinal County and have no idea where the epicenter was but Last night while watching TV I felt movement in my chair. Now I lived in Los Angeles for 40 years and am very familiar with earthquake movements. I just sat there thinking how strange it was and for the life of me never thought EARTHQUAKE in AZ plus the movement was very light. After reading the thread madzonie started I believe what I felt was the earthquake but nothing like the ones I experienced in CA.
