I have a Kenmore Ultra Wash that my parents installed well over 10 years ago and it still runs like a champion. Depends on how fancy you want your dishwasher to be, but I have Kenmore stove/fridge and dishwasher and all work really well.

It was old when I bought this house in 2008... Never worked that well anyway...so now I need a new one..Bosch seems like the best out there...I would love some advice on what works for others.... Also, I was thinking of going to Lowe's.. How is there install service??? I have had bad experiences with Home Depot, we here they cracked a refrigerator shelf during unloading, then "couldn't" hook up the ice maker. ( which I had paid for!!!!)

Does your Whirlpool have a stainless steel tub or plastic? I hear the newer Whirlpools( they also make Kitchen Aid) do not hold up as well as the older models...... What do you think????

When we were looking at new ones we went to Home Depot and the salesman steered us away from the expensive ones. I forget which one he recommended but he said, honestly they're all pretty much the same and just because you spend a ton of money doesn't mean you're getting a better product.

I have a Bosch tall tub with stainless steel interior. It is almost nine years old and I love it. It's so quiet I have to check to ensure I put it on. When I bought it, it was the most energy efficient dishwasher on the market. Whatever brand you buy get an energy star one.

Tam, I have a Bosch that's about 4 years old. Bought it from Sears because of the maintenance agreement factor and the installation by a licensed plumber. I'm sure the contractors used by Lowe's and Home Depot are licensed too but I was just so used to dealing with Sears that we stuck with them.

I really think each home improvement store varies by location. I've heard wonderful things about a HD and Lowes in another town, not so much for one of them here.

eta: Has it really been that long since you bought your place?? It seems like such a short time ago-

Hey Tam, when you buy your dishwasher, don't forget to buy a "piggyback" too! That's the cord that attaches to the dishwasher and goes to the outlet. You would think they come with the cord and plug but they don't. We didn't know that but fortunately the plumber was able to use the old one.

And Sears used to/probably still does have the price match feature. If another store is selling the exact same model for less, they will sell it to you for that price. My upright freezer was on sale at either HD or Lowes for $150 less and they gave it to me. They did the search on the computer too- I'd do it myself on any future purchases.

Forgo the maintenance agreement for now. You're covered under warranty; just before the warranty expires call and request a quote from Sears. I do like their agreements....what the cost of one visit would have been usually covers one year on a couple of appliances!

We have a new dishwasher being delivered and installed tomorrow. Our current one sprang a leak in the door a couple days ago. It is a GE Profile (15 years old) and was actually under a recall from 2007.

The recall is open-ended (meaning it never expires) and offers 2 options - a free repair OR a rebate on a new one (must be another GE). We had no problems with the dishwasher at the time of the recall, so just sat on it. The dishwasher ran perfectly the last 7 years, until a couple days ago.

We've opted to buy a new one and get the rebate rather than "fixing" a 15 year old machine. I chose a relative inexpensive GE model because it came in "bisque" - the color of my other appliances. We want replace them all down the road, but so far everything else is working fine. Since I can't decide what finish/color I want for my eventual new ones, I decided to just replace the bisque for now.

My net cost of the new one will be around $150, so I figured we can get a few more years from our bisque "suite" of appliances, then buy all new ones in a different color.
