I used to always over pack. Getting through airports was a chore. After I began traveling regularly for work, I learned to pack right and light. I carry a 21" roll one no matter how long I am going. Rolling clothes is key. Chose colors that coordinate. I don't take bulky clothes, as I am very hot-natured anyway.

For example: for a five day business trip, I will take 4 - 5 light-weight business dresses, rolled; two toppers for them: a business cardigan or blazer; a pair of casual pair of pants and 2 - 3 casual tops for night time. 1 -2 night shirts. All my skin care and cosmetics fit in my zip lock bag. It never leaves my suit case. I always keep it packed. And, there is room for my No-Wrinkle pillow.

Easy!

This is very do-able, once you learn how and get used to it.

My husband and two kids, now 17 & 20, can easily do two weeks in a 21" suitcase. Mom can't do it. And yes I wind up with one or two tops I don't wear, maybe a pair of pants or a dress that return home unworn. While yes, I take a few more toiletries than they do . . . makeup & skincare, I have pared it down to the bare minimum. Even daughter manages a 21" suitcase and multiple pairs of shoes although I will say they are usually sandals being spring/summer type trips. Although they do take an additional smaller carry-on with a few items, daughter usually a Vera Weekender and son a Nike or other sports duffel bag including their books and such for reading on the plane.

But I agree, rolling clothes is key. Makes a huge difference. But that is why I have an AA and Delta linked credit cards so I get that *free* checked back so why should I have to skimp by with a 21"?

I take 4 tops that will get me through the week. 3 pants or capris depending on the weather, two pairs of shoes, and a jean jacket or a white jacket. I also bring a maxi skirt. That is all the clothes I would pack for a week. I sometime might purchase a piece of clothing if it captures my attention, usually a cute top.

The OP is talking a TWO week trip in a 21" suitcase. Big difference. A week in a 21" suitcase, easy peasy . . . two weeks, a bit tougher. My family can do it. I can't.

I was thinking, it would have to be they sleep naked, and 14 itsy bitsy bikini's. haha But my very modest 20 yr old daughter can do it and with "style" and fully clothed each day. haha So I know it can be done.

I can do it for clothes, but I have to also have a toiletries bag for shampoo, make-up and meds.

I wear the heavier clothes on the plane, like jeans and a jacket, so they won't take up a lot of room in a suitcase. I always make it a soft jacket and use it like a pillow or blanket on the plane.

I can do it in one carryon. Clothes are so thin and light these days, I can fit 6 tops in the space that used to be filled by 3 tops. And I only pack one pair of jeans instead of 3 like I used to pack. I also fit in a dress and 2 more pairs of shoes. The one catch is that I do wash my clothes during the trip. My "personal" bag was a Vera Bradley backpack that easily squished to fit under the sit in front of me, my smaller purse was in the backpack with laptop, ipad, and medicines.

Agree about rolling. Not only do the clothes take up less space but they arrive in better condition, in terms of not being creased or wrinkled. Also put stuff inside the shoes and fill any spaces like that.

I used to say - take everything out you want to pack and lay it on the bed, or somewhere, then remove half of it.
