I don't post here often but my husband just got transferred to a town very nearby Savannah. We are moving from Maine so big change for us! Does anyone live in that area that could give me some tips on areas to live, what it's like, things to do. Any info would be greatly appreciated. I'm so nervous! I've lived here my whole life so this is a big life change. Hoping its a good change! Thanks so much in advance.

I've never lived there, but I've visited many times when my husband was stationed in Georgia. It is a beautiful city with a long and wonderful history. Many things to see and do. There are many wonderful restaurants that I'm sure you will enjoy. I wish you luck and hope you have many happy years living there!

I am in Georgia too.. we'uns ain't all a** baccards!

I'm going to step in here and say what I think the poster meant.

It doesn't have to mean anything offensive.

But it IS different living in different parts of the country.

Weather, for one thing. Landscape, scenery. Cultural things..how things are done, local vernacular, how outgoing (or not) the people are, local foods and customs and traditions...to name a few.

So if you've lived your whole life in Maine, it definitely could be culture shock to move to the South. Doesn't mean it's bad, or that you won't get used to it,or won't grow to LOVE it in your new home.

Just like if you lived your whole life in NYC, and you moved to, for example, Espanola, NM. You would definitely have culture shock at first.

I understand what is being said. It will be very different in many ways and I know that. My inlaws live in the Atlanta area. We've been there to visit a few times and the people seen very nice. Yes, different in many ways. But I'm looking forward to getting away from months and months of snow and ice that seems to go on forever.

I had a relative who was from Savannah and he loved it there and when he was uprooted to Los Angeles he was not happy at all and frequently spoke of the beauty of Savannah. He had a really pleasant accent as well that I loved listening to. Fond memories.

I have only been to Savannah once and it is a wonderful city draped in history and culture. I want to tell you that I grew up in Massachusetts and moved to North Florida in 1981. Although I love New England, including Maine I also love the South from October until May. What I don't enjoy but you get used to is the hot summer. In North Florida we get a change of seasons and it gets just cold enough. We get some freezes where I live. Savannah is about 3 hours north of me so it is a little cooler there in the winter. Fortunately, in the South the homes and buildings are built with outstanding Air Conditioning Systems that are efficient in the heat. You will laugh when you first get there seeing people where winter clothes and boots when it is 55 degrees but after a while you get acclimated and it feels cold to you too. I miss the Lobster from New England and the New England Brown Bread in the can but most anything can be found at Publix Market. Publix is the best market I have ever shopped in. They do have a Publix in Savannah. I love October through May because it is cool, no snow (but you may get some in Savannah) but it goes away quick. No Salt on my Car. I can fly to Boston whenever I want but prefer to live here. Savannah is not a country type of town, it is a tourist town. Very nice. I know some people who live on Prince Edward Island in the summer and Savannah all winter. They bought a house there and like it. You might enjoy some of the different foods in the South.

maizer, good luck. My niece is moving from Philadelphia to Savannah next month due to DH's new job. They've been there a couple of times to look for housing. She has lived in the Philly area her whole life, and her DH grew up in Upstate NY-so this will be culture shock for them, too.

maizer, you sound like a very nice person. I know my niece and her husband are sweethearts. All of you would be an asset to any area!

I have to add that including growing up in Massachusetts with quick access to Boston, I also lived in New York very close to the city for 5 years. I still love the South and am quite acclimated to it. I think one winter in the south will convince you how much you love it.

You guys are the best! I love all the input and information. Sounds like we will be very happy there once we get settled. Lots of things to do before we get settled, namely selling our house here. DH is going down and moving into an apartment until we can sell then I will go join him and then we will look for a house. Scary but exciting!
