17 Puppies!

A bull mastiff from Texas gave birth to 17 puppies today. 12 girls and 5 boys. The human family was expecting 8 puppies, but they just kept on coming! The clip I saw on TV showed the proud mama trying to feed the puppies who were falling over each other to get to the dairy bar, LOL. I'm typing on a tablet, so I can't post a photo, but maybe another poster will be kind enough to do so.

Yes, they appear to all be healthy and rambunctious. The mama will certainly have her paws full trying to keep that family in line!

just an odd fact but an appropriate one for this thread.............each pup has it's own ""spot"" (don't think it will let me use the right word) that it goes to every time......no others but that one specific spot......which I find amazing...................................raven

Thanks for sharing, Topaz Gem. I've always wanted a mastiff. I'm sure they'll have no problems finding homes for these little ones. They are so cute! I wonder how much they'll ask for them. According to HLNTV.com there's already a debate because the owners said they will list them on Craigslist and some people are saying that might not be the safe way to go.

One blog indicated that this litter broke the Texas state record for the largest litter of puppies, but the world record is 24. Can you imagine?

Anyway, back to the puppy program already in progress: those puppies are too cute, especially when they belly up to the "dairy bar." I give full credit to Topaz Gem for the "dairy bar" comment.

When my Irish Setter had puppies back in 1974, she had 17 pups, but 2 were stillborn & one died of pneumonia, after inhaling amniotic fluid during the birth process, which was very long. After all that, I had to take her to the vet ER due to eclampsia for IV calcium.

It was a nightmare, because she had zero maternal instincts & wanted nothing to do with them. I had to order her to lay down so the puppies could nurse a little in shifts, because she didn't have enough spigots for all of them at once, & then I supplemented bottle feeding them puppy formula every 2 hours 24 hours a day & also had to wipe them with warm moist cotton balls to "potty" them. I was exhausted after all that & I had her spayed, show dog or not! I guess if I'd had 17 babies, I wouldn't feel too "motherly" either! lol

how amazing. the grandmother (owner) has her work cut out for her for the next few weeks in making sure everyone gets their fill at the ""dairy bar.""

When I see stories like this I can't help but think of all the dogs dying in shelters -- this problem is created by people.
