Murphy beds?

I'm thinking of moving/doing a big downsizing.I live by myself and cat.Is there anyone who has recent experience with murphy bed? Thanks for you thoughts.

Not recent, but a lot of homes in SF used to have them. When I was a teenager, our home had a back sunroom (common for the city) One wall looked to be all closets, a long one and one regular size, but the long one was a Murphy bed. I loved that thing! It pulled down when we had guests and it had a great mattress. I think the mattress is most important.

Looking back, it seems like someone was always staying with us. A cousin who just got out of the Navy, my Dad's best friend who was a recent widower, and various relatives trooping through.

In later years, my mother would sleep there once in awhile when my father's snoring kept her awake.

They are great space savers. I've never had one, but they always make me giggle when I think of the movies where someone is on a Murphy bed and it springs back into the wall and the person is trapped in there.

I know they're very expensive. A sleeper sofa is a lot cheaper.

Hi Sabatini!

I still think they're great. They don't take up that much room on the wall, easy to pull down, and they don't take up the space a bed or sofa bed takes up. There's just something fun about them

My mother used that back room as a sewing room when someone wasn't staying with us.

I wonder why they went out of style? They're really the perfect thing to have when visitors come! The one we had was on the opposite side of a long closet, and pulled down into the living room. When the bed was closed up, the 'wall' that face the living room was made of awesome old wood panels.

To the OP, the above is actually a Murphy bed from a custom place, and it's pricey!

I slept on one in my younger years, 19 - 20, when I was surrounded by other college kids.

I always slept with my head at the foot of the bed for fear someone would put the bed UP in the bed closet.

We slept on one when visiting friends recently, beautiful and very comfortable.

I don't have one but have seen them at the home show and they seem to work nicely. I have a ""guest"" room set up with a sleeper sofa but no one enjoys sleeping on it. If I ever remodel I would love to have a Murphy bed.
