They are going to pay full tuition for their employees who want a college education.

Let me attribute this - Bloomberg News -

Starbucks workers who work at least 20 hours a week and enroll in Arizona State University’s online bachelor’s degree will get $6,500, about half of their tuition, for the first two years and full tuition for the final two, the company said in an e-mailed statement.

Most likely there is a GPA requirement as well. That is, you must achieve a GPA of at least 2.0 (for example).

You are correct, Georgie.

From ASU website,

Freshmen

You are considered a freshman for application purposes if you have not attended college at all, or have fewer than 24 transferable credit hours (with a minimum 2.0 cumulative GPA).

Applicants must successfully complete ASU competency requirements. Admission may be granted with one deficiency in no more than two competency areas. Deficiencies cannot be in both math and laboratory science. Students must earn a minimum 2.0 in any subject area.

While I commend Starbucks for this I hope they also give the same type of offer to those that prefer going into a trade that does not include a college education. Too often it is seen as a college education being the only answer for one to live a successful life. While I know many with college educations that are living the life they planned to live, I also know many that have children and/or grandchildren with college degrees that cannot find employment that has any thing to do with their education.

Many of my long ago co-workers had college degrees and they worked beside me for many years making the same income as myself. While knowledge is power no matter what does in life, having a formal education is not the route for everyone to find what they deem to be a successful life. In my view of life success is not based on how much $$$ one makes during that time.

I think that, never mind I will leave it at this.

I so agree, John.

This is a wonderful thing that Starbucks is doing for its eligible employees but as you said, trade schools are very valuable education as well.

Mike Rowe put it best, Somebody is going to have to build the corner office before the executive can sit in it.

It's a good investment that they are making. I'm not so sure vocational ed could be done in the same manner though. This is in regards to on-line education and vocational ed is more hands-on. It would be nice if they would expand the program to include some way of supporting vocational ed.

Only instance in my life where I'm holding a grudge, and I don't believe there is anything that will redeem Starbucks for me. A Starbucks in NYC charge RESCUE WORKERS $130 for 3 cases of water during the 9/11 crisis. UNFORGIVEABLE.

Arizona State University (my undergrad alma mater) is a HUGE university with A LOT of different programs. I suggest you take a look at their degree programs...You would be surprised at what's offered.

Furthermore, much of online programming is designed with people in mind who are already working, and who are looking to increase their skills in order to move up the ladder.

I suspect that Starbucks did this with that in mind...encouraging employees to move forward within the business field, ...with them, for instance.

Hckynut I agree!

I am in the midst of looking for some SKILLED trades to do a lot of jobs around the house that my disabled husband can no longer do.

I cannot FIND anybody who is really willing to do the job ..it is either too small..they don't call back...etc.

The price for a plumber was shocking as well as tree removal etc. All prices we were willing to pay for decent competent work...

I say HVAC, electrical, plumbing, automotive..should all be included too!
