Revealing your baby's gender with a cake

Not sure if this has been discussed...

We went to a gathering yesterday where an expectant couple revealed the gender of their first child (due in October) with a cake.

Apparently this is the latest "trend", giving the bakery a sealed envelope from the doctor with the sonogram, and they create the cake to match the gender. I was expecting the cake to be colored pink or blue inside, but when they cut into it all I saw was chocolate. They used the coloring in the frosting between the layers.

Has anyone done this or been to a party where the couple revealed the gender in this way?

No- it was Father's day, so they were supposed to bring a dessert to the get together. Since the family was already gathered, they figured they would do it this way.

They did the same thing for her side of the family.

Yes, my daughter in law had this type of cake at her baby shower March 2013.

Well, it's a cute idea/trend. As long as family and friends live nearby. Nice to get together for a nice reason! A slice of cake, a cup of coffee........makes for a nice day.

actually have not really heard about this until tonight.....when they were discussing it on the real housewives of orange county. brianna (the daughter of one of the housewives) said they had a gender reveal at their wedding and the inside of the cake had blue in it......she was pregnant before she got married. with her second one she had a party place put colored balloons in a box. they had given them the card from the doctor. they brought the box home and opened it up to share with the family the gender of the second baby.

The parents knew already, but this was their second "revealing". I don't know if they knew before the bakery made the first cake.

They are Jewish, so they don't do baby showers. This was the first I had heard of it, so I don't know if it's common with people this age (first babies) or because the expectant mom does party/wedding invitations as her business, or because they wouldn't be having a shower before the baby arrives.

Call me old-fashioned, but I think you should reveal your baby's gender by actually giving birth to it.

Luckily, no one in my family believes in knowing the gender until the actual birth. There are too few surprises left in life. This should be one of them.

I can't imagine anyone caring too much except for the parents and grandparents. Maybe it's different for a small family.

My niece had a party this past summer to reveal the gender of her daughter. It was really cute. The party was at a lake and featured a cookout. They served pink and blue cupcakes for dessert (they did not use a cake for the actual reveal. See below).

It was not a baby shower with gifts. Just a fun gathering for family and friends to get together and celebrate the coming baby.

She had a bulletin board with pink and blue fish for everyone to pin up their guess. When it came time to reveal the gender, my niece and her husband "fished" a big pink wooden fish out of the lake.

It was a really fun time.

Some people have friends who care about them and are also excited about a new baby's arrival, not just their families.

I've been to parties where there was a cake or a balloon wasreleased. My best friend went with balloons, one pink, one blue. No one knew she was expecting twins and it was really a great surprise.

My daughter hosted a baby reveal shower for her friends. She was the only one who knew the gender and she had a GIANT balloon filled with confetti. The parents to be each took a pin and popped it together to reveal all blue confetti. That's how they, their friends and family found out about their baby boy! I had never heard of a reveal party before.

Never been to one of these; however, I have seen some celebrity baby showers in mags that have done that.
