RIP Ruby Dee

Ruby Dee, the award-winning actress whose seven-decade career included triumphs on stage and screen, has died. She was 91.

Dee died peacefully at her New Rochelle, New York, home Wednesday, according to her representative, Michael Livingston.

Dee -- often with her late husband, Ossie Davis -- was a formidable force in both the performing arts community and the civil rights movement. She was friends with Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcolm X and received the Frederick Douglass Award in 1970 from the National Urban League.

She earned an Oscar nomination for her performance in "American Gangster" (2007).

I remember both Ruby and her wonderful husband Ossie Davis. He was a terrific actor. How time flies, I can't believe she was 91. God Bless her soul.

Nora Davis Day said of her mother’s death:

We have had her for so long and we loved her so much. She took her final bow last night at home surrounded by her children and grandchildren. We gave her our permission to set sail. She opened her eyes, closed her eyes and away she went.

It sounds like Ruby had a very peaceful transition, surrounded by loving family members. That's all we can ask for. Now she's with her love, Ossie.

She was just mentioned this week on the Tony Awards. Remember her as Blanche's childhood Nanny in a Golden Girls episode.

She and her husband were outstanding at their craft.

I read a book about them and was surprised (to read) they had an open marriage.

I met her about twenty years ago when I taught school. She approached me while at the school to say hello. I thought she was so down to earth and beautiful. She will surely be missed!

Just heard that she is being cremated and placed in the urn with her husband. ""We're in this together."" May they continue their love and RIP together.

I grew up in the town where they lived in New York. I went to grammar school with Nora Davis, Ruby and Ossie's daughter. I would often see Ruby in the A&P supermarket. Also going to my school was Beverly Poitier daughter of Sidney Poitier. I don't remember seeing Mr. Portier though. I'm sure they were at all the school assemblies though. That was a long time ago. Ruby Dee was so pretty. I remember that.
