A 13-year-old girl declared brain dead after suffering complications from surgery will receive an honorary diploma during her school's 8th-grade graduation this week. Omari Sealey, the uncle of Jahi McMath, said the girl's school in Oakland will give the diploma to a family member. Jahi underwent tonsil surgery at UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital Oakland in December, then went into cardiac arrest, and was later declared brain dead. After her family went to court to prevent the hospital from taking her off a ventilator, Jahi was released to them and moved to another facility. Sealey said his niece is doing well and is responding to voice commands. Her mom said recently she is "blossoming into a teen."

Very thoughtful of her school to do that. It will mean a lot to her family I'm sure. Interesting that many posters here and others too predicted she would not last this long. The world is more than we know.

That source says she's being awarded the certificate, but everything else I've seen (from sources like SF Gate) say the family asked for the award, not that it's a done deal. The school is refusing to comment.

I would think the school would want to make this into a huge media event....talk about good-will. But if they're not commenting? That's odd. Just like everything else.

fact is, we know nothing at all about her.

It's an 8th grade graduation ~ why in the world would they want to make it a huge media event?

IF there is any chance there is any sign of life, I would hope the family would let a doctor verify that. I have no doubt there would be an outpouring of good will and cash for the family. I doubt there is a sign of life.

If she was not brain dead, of course this would be a huge media event! "We miss you!", tons of cards signed by everyone, cameras showing the principle delivering the diploma...with all the attention this garnered last Fall, it would be equalled with as much attention w/ the diploma. But of course, she's brain dead....and no one will touch that with a ten-ft pole.

how come when CPS thinks a child might be mistreated or abused, they do a home check to verify, yet in this case, this poor girl could be laying in a bed full of bedsores, in a coma, wasting away and no one is allowed to check her? I just can't believe that an agency existing to protect children cannot at least check on this girl to see if she is suffering.

I watched a woman waste away on a ventilator for one week after she had a stroke during a procedure and was declared brain dead, and even in that short time, she became unrecognizable from fluid accumulation and such.

Ever see the movie The Night Listener starring Robin Williams? It was based on a true story. This story reminds me of that.

I do not think she is improving at all. I believe there has been a private funeral. Maybe, "her body" did not make it (her heart/organs gave out) right after the transport.
