Underwire bras

I was fitted by a bra fitter at Dilliards. Bought 2 expensive Wacoal bras. They felt a bit snug bur she said one has to break in a bra and after a few wearings it won't feel as snug. Has anyone ever heard this theory and had the experience of a bra feeling better after a few wearings and washings? Each bra was $ 55.00.

That's the brand I wear as well. They are worth every penny and my ta-ta's are grateful. The support is good. I hand wash them and NEVER put them in the dryer.

I bought the Breezies underwire t-shirt bras and there was no break-in time. I think they're fabulous and I love the way they make me look. Honestly, I've never tried a Wacoal, but they're very highly rated and are Oprah's favorite bras if that makes any difference.

It's probably different for each person, though. Some people are more sensitive to the underwire and others (like me) barely notice it. I'd give it a few more washings and wearings and see if the fit improves.

I was told that fitting an underwire bra correctly and comfortably is very tricky. I tried on four different models, and none were comfortable or supported me correctly. The fitter finally said that as much as she would love to sell me one of the pricey underwires, the good old reliable Playtex soft-cup 18-hour works best for me.

I don't agree with that elruth. I had a similar situation with some bras once and never did like them. Now, I fit myself instead of listening to the salesperson.

ON the other hand if the one who fitted me were actually an expert I might have had a better experience.

PS: I do wash my bras in the machine in a lingerie bag on the gentlest hand wash cycle but NEVER put them in the dyrer.

I agree with what the sales rep told you. My bras always feel a bit tight at first but stretch somewhat with wearing.

I wear Wacoal too. Love the Awareness style.

I've heard it before about giving the bra a bit of time to get comfy, but strongly disagree with the statement. It should be snug, but not uncomfortable on the loosest hooks when purchased. The elastic will relax some over time, but you have more hooks to make it tighter as time goes by. When it gets too loose and you're on the tightest hooks, it's time to replace it.

This is slightly off topic, but, I think the information is very important to share.

Underwire bras are usually great when you find the right one.

Last summer I was wearing one when the wire poked through the fabric. It bruised my skin, but, I thought nothing of it. When I had a mammography, the internal bruise showed up in a perfect circle shape and it looked bad. After a second test and an ultra sound, it was determined that I had a bruise from the wire. I remembered exactly when that happened. It was quite a scary experience.

So, be careful if the wire pokes through to your skin.

I've worn that brand for years and never once had the fitting person tell me it needed to be broken in. If it's so tight that it's uncomfortable I'm not purchasing it.

The elastic in a bra "gives" as you wear it the first time. If you put on the second day it will feel looser. When you wash it, it will draw up and feel tight again. After many wearings and washings, the elastic loosens permanently.

Well, it stands to reason that it will stretch out a little bit, but not much I don't think. Wacoal is superior quality and I think I'd want it to fit right, out of the gate.

Oddly, I recently purchased a couple of Wacoal bras (online) that looked like what I would like. I've had a lot of experience with them in the past. When I got them (two different styles), neither one felt 'right' to me.

Consequently, I went back to a couple of Playtex styles that I like. How weird is that. I paid $112 for those two Wacoal bras and for the same amount of money I got four of the Playtex one in the two styles I like. Oh well.

I've just learned to buy plenty of the Playtex styles I like because if I just get a few, when they wear out and I go to find more of them I cannot find that style anymore. So now I have about 10 of the two styles in my drawer and several more packed away in the armoire. Live and learn. Murphy's Law says that whatever I like will become obsolete.

I think under wires are uncomfortable---I'm so flat, I wear Victoria Secret lacy cami bras--just slip them over.

I was always told that a bra should be fitted to the second set of hooks. That way if you gain a little weight you can move them to the first or biggest set of hooks. If you lose a little weight, you can tighten it to the third or snuggest set of hooks.

I don't think a bra should be uncomfortable. Yes it will loosen somewhat as you wear it but you shouldn't be uncomfortable in the meantime.

You will find most professional fitters will give you a smaller band and a larger cup. They believe the band should fit snuggly when the bra is new. Personally I prefer a looser band. I do not want to wait until the band stretches. I buy a band 1 size larger than recommended. When it looses up, I pitch it.

I love Wacoal bras.

The bra fitter did want me to size down in the band but I said I didn't want to. She did increase the cup size so now I am a 34 C. I did find that after I washed by hand one of the bras and air dried it that it didn't feel as snug so I am hopeful that I will get used to it. I know I can wash in the machine on cold delicate and put it in a lingerie bag and then air dry but for $ 55.00 I wanted to hand wash it for now. The directions said warm water. I was surprised as usually bras say wash in cold.

You should not be able to get more than two fingers under your bra. If you can get more than two fingers underneath the bra is too loose. 90% of the woman in the US wear bras that are not tight enough.

If you have trouble finding your favorite bra, check on eBay. When Breezies discontinued my favorite, I found about a dozen in my size, brand-new with tags, for about 1/3 the Q price. Most are sold at eBay stores; you don't have to get involved in an auction.

Is this your first underwire?

A bra should be snug but not uncomfortable. The most important thing is the support and the right style.

I believe that a man created the first bra, if that tells you something. Men should have to wear them too! And I have seen men that really need one!

I had a Dillards fitter help me with my bras. I also bought the wachol awareness bras. Mine are tight and I do wonder if I should have gone up another size. However, for the first time in 18 years, someone fit me with a prosthesis which looks good and fits. I had to pay out of pocket for it since , at the time, they did not have a contract with insurance companies for mastectomy supplies. At this point, I will always go there for my bras.
