I haven't been there is a long time, but if you've got the money, as already mentioned, the Frontenac is iconic. The city is full of art galleries, sidewalk artists, wonderful places to eat, the boardwalk which also has musicians and artists, the St Lawrence Seaway. It's just a lovely, lovely place to relax and enjoy a piece of French Canada.

Anyone travel there recently and if so can you suggest some things to do, places to stay or dine? It's been so many years since we were there last but looking forward to seeing the city again. I remember how much it reminded me of Europe. Thanks!

My husband took me their for my birthday one year (July). I remember going for a horse & buggy ride through the old city and the driver was telling us about their winter celebration (can't remember what it was called). I was very interested and the driver told us what the winter temps were and the hubby said no way. I actually would still be interested in going to that but I have not yet. Beautiful old city - we ate some great food and wish I could remember more but whatever you do, I'm sure you will enjoy it.

Wonderful sights to see. Walk the Plains of Abraham along the St. Lawrence River. Visit the art galleries. Eat fabulous food and shop. Have fun!!!
I was in Alberta last September and was astounded at how expensive everything was. Meals and hotels were at least twice what they are in the US. I'm talking about at places like Chili's, not a grand restaurant.

Opurrra, Chateau Frontenac is one of those grand old hotels. Loews Le Concorde is in the same general area and adjacent to The Plains of Abraham. Check out Trip Advisor for more info. I never go anywhere without looking at Trip Advisor for hotel and restaurant info. LM

In the 70's, stayed at the Chateau Frontenac. We arrived by car very late and the hotel stood out in the moonlight light a well lit postcard of a fairy tale. However, the room was so old that the closet wouldn't fit but a few items of clothing; the mattress had to be reinforced and was still uncomfortable; and, the worst memory: for dinner I ordered a whole baby lobster. The waiter offered to remove it from its shell---seeing how little meat there was for the outrageous price, he returned all the shells to my dish!!! We were to have stayed a week but left after 3 days: bored with boat ride, attitude of folks ( I have a Masters in French Literature and speak the language which they obviously didn't know), the funicular, the University, and shops. Hope it has changed for the better for your trip. Our trip was in September.

I've stayed in Chateau Frontenac in the summer. It is an old European feeling hotel--but I loved its architecture. Just riding down to the little shops below--it was interesting. After dinner, I just sat outside and people watched and enjoyed the view of the river and city. There is a beautiful cathedral there. I'm all about architecture. (Cathedral-Basilica of Notre Dame).

Our trip was in September.

Why didn't you converse with them in French then?

jikz, it is a shame that you didn't have a great time there. I would think someone who studied french Literature would have reveled in the French Culture rather than dismiss it. And, I don't think it's quite fair to blame a hotel restaurant for how much meat is in a lobster, but maybe as a New Englander I'm just used to the amount of waste/to meat ratio. Hope it at least tasted good.

Opurra: Even if you don't stay at the Chateau, go in and check out the marvelous interior and have tea or glass of wine in the lobby. Very European.

As a amateur student of history, I love wandering through the old city with its narrow roads and cute shops and galleries. There are some shops which sell Native Inuit items (both type souvenir and "real" art carvings and prints if that is of interest.

The overlook at The Plains of Abraham is another beautiful historic place to stroll with a lovely tree shaded park adjacent if the weather is too hot and sunny. The whole 7 year war period fascinates me with the British and French with their Native allies vieing for control of the area.

Hope you have a wonderful time.
