anyone ever heard of/shopped at Dirt Cheap stores?????

i had NEVER heard of this place!!! i went shopping a few cities over from where i live and passed by this new brick building that said "Dirt Cheap" and wondered what in the world that was. on my way back home i decided to go take a look. OMG - i almost ran out the store screaming it was such a hot mess!!! i could not believe that this nice building looked like this on the inside and that there were actually ALOT of people inside shopping. after the initial shock and a pep talk so that i would not panic and run back out the door i looked and saw they had alot of building supplies/home interior products. when i saw this i almost wept!

primed MDF trim moulding
50¢ per linear foot!
Base, crown, chair rail, casing and some facia trim! Most lengths are 16', and widths range from 3" to 8"

i saw some of the most beautiful big rugs - still wrapped in plastic at 65% off the retail price and they had so many my head was spinning! dozens and dozens of them in these huge boxes to choose from.

after checking i found out they have a Dirt Cheap Building Supplies store in Hattiesburg with even more products like this - tile,hardwood flooring,lighting,etc! that is a couple of hours from me but i know the area because my DH's family is from there so we were always back and forth visiting.

preds it was like walking into another dimension!!!! gorgeous building and beautiful facade and then BAM!!!! when you walk through the door it is barely organzied chaos!!!!

but ITA with you - it is the perfect place to play around in if you have the patience to sift through it to find a gem! it is time for a road trip to Hattiesburg!!!

You are so right. I went into one and almost immediately exited the store. Totally unorganized and tons of people sorting through all the stuff. Not for me.

I know of one in the St. Louis county area, but have never been there. They advertise on TV all the time.....

yes that is exactly what it looked like!!! the clothes and things i did not go near but when i saw tile and hardwood flooring and those big rugs still in plastic i told myself to just put on my big girl pants and push through!!!!

brii - take one for the team and go so you can tell us all about it!!! how do they expect to draw people into the store with a name like that!

Shes, we went a few weekends ago. They are only open on the weekend.

They advertise priced 70-80% off retail. They had a ton of leather sofas and recliners. Prices were outrageous though. Lot of odds and end kind of pieces. Nothing worth going back for.

Accessories weren't that great either.

It was a waste of time for us...

i hate when that happens but don't think of that as a waste of time. you have to at least go and see for yourself! if you then go back expecting different THEN it would be a waste of good time! i will give something a try or look-and-see at least once. if then i decide i will never return so be it but at least i know for myself and not what someone else thinks about it. i chalk it up as a learning experience! sometimes you find treasure and sometimes you find junk!

where I used to live there was the 'Dump', which served wonderful home cooked food. in Virginia we have the 'Dump,,,,furniture store. It's not bad at all. good prices.

I can see where stores like this would be beneficial for DIYers, or people that have vacation rentals, or even charity organizations. My brother would enjoy a store like this, he loves a challenge and good price. He and his friends scour Craigslist all the time and have gotten some fabulous deals on high end tools and automotive items.

that is me to a "T" - but even i have my limits!!!!! LOL

we have a chain of stores called Hudson's Salvage Center - and as the name implies it is just that. salvage from other stores that have had fires or floods and things like that so they need to get rid of the stock they were able to save. i went to the biggest one once even though my brother warned me not to wast me time! but as i said - i like to see things for myself with my hard head! he was right - i will not go back again!!!

We have a store called 'Ollies' that is like that. Quite a mess but clean and fun to look around! I bought a nice spring-form pan and other kitchen things, sheets, hair color, etc for a few bucks. The store simply buys out merchandise that has been retired because of packaging changes, product color changes, that kind of thing. They also sell packaged food- the cereal may be ready to expire in 3 months for example and I'll buy that but I won't go near the foods from foreign countries!

this is what i do not get about their system. with the comforter sets it looked like each and every piece that comes in the bag was priced seperately instead of paying for just the set. and it was such a mess back there with everything out of the bags and all over the place because they had been picked apart!

i am going back for those room sized rugs though - those prices at 65% off are too good to pass up!!! i will just grin and bare it because i need a new one since i am redecorating our bedroom.

and i have to go to the store in Hattiesburg since that is the one with all the building supplies/home decor items.
