Loved this book. Read it in 3 days. I'm a sucker for family stories and this one hit the spot. I won't spoil it, but it surprised me the way it "turned out."

Onto Scratched (nf) by Allen Salkin which is about the Food Network. I love the channel and my niece works there so have to read it.

Hi Sweet, so glad you loved The Mourning Hours - one of my favorite books from last year!

She has a new one coming out in November. See below.

From the author of publishing sensation The Mourning Hours comes a powerful new novel that explores every parent's worst nightmare…

THE FRAGILE WORLD

The Kaufmans have always considered themselves a normal, happy family. Curtis is a physics teacher at a local high school. His wife, Kathleen, restores furniture for upscale boutiques. Daniel is away at college on a prestigious music scholarship, and twelve-year-old Olivia is a happy-go-lucky kid whose biggest concern is passing her next math test.

And then comes the middle-of-the-night phone call that changes everything. Daniel has been killed in what the police are calling a "freak" road accident, and the remaining Kaufmans are left to flounder in their grief.

The anguish of Daniel's death is isolating, and it's not long before this once-perfect family finds itself falling apart. As time passes and the wound refuses to heal, Curtis becomes obsessed with the idea of revenge, a growing mania that leads him to pack up his life and his anxious teenage daughter and set out on a collision course to right a wrong.

An emotionally charged novel, The Fragile World is a journey through America's heartland and a family's brightest and darkest moments, exploring the devastating pain of losing a child and the beauty of finding healing in unexpected ways.

It sounds a lot like her earlier book. And another one I've read by someone else. If I think of the name I'll post it here for those who like this kind of story.

I enjoyed The Mourning Hours.

ETA...Found it. Some may have already read it. We Were the Mulvaneys (Joyce Carol Oates):

Judd is the youngest of the four Mulvaney children - three boys and a girl - on their parents’ lush farm in upstate New York. In his childhood, Judd is swept along by the sheer energy of the Mulvaneys and their wealth of beloved family stories. But now, 30 years old, Judd looks back through his memories to tell the secrets that eventually ripped apart the fabric of his storybook family.

I just finished The Ice Princess by Camilla Lackberg. This is the first time that I have read this author. I guess she has several other mysteries in this series with the main characters being a male police officer and a female writer. I give it 3.5 stars and will probably continue reading the series to see how the relationship between the main characters develops. She is a Swedish author so the book has been translated which always seems to me to make the language flow not quite as smoothly as a book written by an author whose first language is English. But I still enjoyed the story.

Happy summer reading everyone!

I just got yesterday from a friend two books by Katherine Spencer based on Thomas Kinkade's paintings. The one I'm reading now is called Cape Light and it's set in a small town and focuses on it's residents and their small town life. I recommend any book by this team.

Ellen is an overweight, awkward, utterly alone outsider. Everything changes, though, when she meets a charismatic blind woman on a bus. She used to be a famous photographer, but has found that her career (and bank balance) is dwindling. Will her new location, outside of the New York City art scene, bring personal satisfaction, and a fresh lease on life and love? Anna Quindlen is such a witty writer. You will laugh out loud reading this book.

I read three very different books, and I highly recommend all three.

The Storied Life of A.J. Fikry by G. Zevin

Watching You by Michael Robotham

The Secret Life of Violet Grant by Beatriz Williams

On 6/2/2014 colinka said:
On 6/1/2014 colinka said:
Just finished Still Life with Bread Crumbs by Anna Quindlen. Really loved it--recommend it highly!

Sorry I didn't tell you what it was about. A older woman (is 60-ish old?) rents a run-down cabin in upstate New York. She used to be a famous photographer, but has found that her career (and bank balance) is dwindling. Will her new location, outside of the New York City art scene, bring personal satisfaction, and a fresh lease on life and love? Anna Quindlen is such a witty writer. You will laugh out loud reading this book.

Sorry to disagree but that's what makes all these books we read interesting, right?

Hated this one. Thought it very contrived and silly. There were attempts at humor but I never laughed once. Was recommended for my book club as we are all of this age and some thought we would relate to the story. Gladly, I didn't.

After the roofer kills the raccoon because it might come back into the house (couldn't he repair the roof to keep it out? Wasn't that is job?) I gave up. Oh wait, we need him to become the hunky younger lover instead.

And the whole deal with the cross photos and her disfunctional Jewish family? I thought the whole story was bizarre. I realize she wrote many short essays for The New Yorker and thought this was a mishmash of what they didn't print.

Hi Sweet - noticed you had a book by Emma Straub on your favorites list - she has a new book out called The Vacationers which got a great review on Entertainment Weekly. I'm looking forward to reading it.
