On 6/1/2014 hckynut said:
On 6/1/2014 NoelSeven said:

Sure they do. A broken body always means that the mind broke with it. Will leave with your comment. Nah, ain't worth 2 more letters. Said by me: hckynut(john)

There's A LOT of qualifications to that, and having to go one way or another, I'd say that's not essentially true.

One of our greatest minds has a broken body, Stephen Hawking.

Maya Angelou had to have suffered from her body breaking down. At age 86, no one's body is in the same physical condition as it was 50 years prior, and yet her mind was still vital, still creating and thinking through things.

Chronic pain can literally change the brain, but that doesn't mean it's dysfunctional. JFK suffered from chronic pain and yet he led this nation through a great crisis.

The brain, the mind, can handle a lot and not "break."

NoelSeven,

And I totally agree with you. I've stated in the Health Forum for years that when my mind was in trouble my physically fit body helped me get through the toughest of times. I also have said, by my many experiences with physical injury(breakdown)whatever word works best for some, that during my year plus physical injury recoveries from sports injuries or surgeries my strong will(not broken mind)is what helped me through those times.

Anyone that has to rehab from a very long and bad physical injury can tell you the toll it takes on the mind. At some point that is the patients only concern because most of the physical pain is now absent. Now they are dealing with nothing but the facts that their body will not perform in a fashion to which they, as athletes, are accustomed. I've given talks and spoken with many at differing types sports rehab clinics and most of them have mental issues with the rehab moreso that the physical end of it.

Now if someone that has not been in that position many times wants to say different? They can be my guest. I've been through the mind/body injury individually and also through it when both components of this unit could have easily been broken. Why weren't both broken? I give credit to the fact that my brain was able to maintain and retain "optimism" and with optimism often comes success during many trying times.

If I were just "blowing smoke" basing my comments on "studies I read/tests done of others and on and on and on? What I am saying is based on my own personal experiences with some of the worst possible physical and mental ailments that can and do prevail on a human being.

Anyone here can believe what they will and hopefully they will not have to experience some of the ways I gained my knowledge of the strength of both the body and the mind. No, because 1 part is in disrepair or broken does not mean the other suffers from the same or similar malady.

John, thank you for sharing those events in your life.

I cannot stress how much I agree with your points about a strong will... that's worked for me, also.

I want to mention another factor that is true for all of us, and especially true for anyone with lupus... STRESS. Stress affects the body a lot. It can and does cause health issues, particularly extended stress. There's not always a lot we can do about that, but I imagine exercise works well, as you had in sports. There's also evidence biofeedback, mediation and yoga helps.

They are both bad-but I think physical pain is worse.

If the pain is bad enough-it will cause mental anguish.

I'm just thinking of this topic because I have a terrible pain in my lower back and abdomen from a kidney stone at the moment..................

gosh.... let me ponder that and get back to you......... probably NONE. I suffered with HORRIBLE knee pain in both knees for 10 plus years.... when I got to the point of using crutches I knew I was wheel chair bound so got them replaced. Physical pain controls your life... mentally and physically. I hope you get the stone passed or can get help for it.

At the same time my little Italian mother was battling Alzheimer's, a coworker's little Italian mother was racked with constant, agonizing physical pain. My mother was in her eighties and could bend at the waist and put her palms flat on the floor. She tap danced for her doctors. But her mind was dying.

My coworker's mother was in her nineties and sharp as a tack -- her mind allowed her to be fully aware of the agony she was experiencing. She was on massive doses of morphine with little relief.

The coworker and I always debated this. Which was "better?" Which would we prefer?

I think I know.

Have suffered from both at different points in my life, and I would choose Door #3! I think deep emotional pain can manifest in physical pain as well. I guess "if" I had to choose, I would select physical pain because there are certain treatments and medications and pain killers. While there are also medications to help with mental-emotional anguish, it never really goes away. I disagree with the poster that said time heals those things. Some days might be better than others, but it never truly goes away.

And I have suffered from mental anguish as well (loss of my beloved sister, other serious family issues).

I'll take the physical pain any day.

I understand, and you made me think of my choices. I'll have to go with Mental anguish and there's plenty to go around, but the pain I've experienced in my back over the years, no more please. Neither one is what you would ever want to have to choose. But, my worst come to think of it was also possibly brought on by the mental anguish. I think they almost go hand in hand in misery.

Among other issues, I have rheumatoid arthritis and severe osteoporosis, neither of which I can attribute to mental anguish. And the physical issues had nothing to do with the mental anguish issues. They would have happened anyway.

There are conditions that can be aggravated by either of the issues we speak of, however.
