Mayo Or Miracle Whip?

Which do you prefer and, if mayo, which brand?

We like mayo, but haven't been known to refuse anything made with Miracle Whip lol. I prefer Hellmann's, and I've tried just about every brand such as Kraft's (not as rich) and Wegmans (so-so).

I remember mom buying a brand called Cain's because Dad loved it--it was thick, creamy, and rich. Many of the local delis around here supposedly used it for their mayo-based salads. Mom used to get it at a store called Hegedorn's, but you can't find it now. DH has some relatives in Maine, and one of them mentioned that it hails from New England.

How about you?

No Miracle Whip here. We use Best Foods, which is the west coast version of Hellmann's, and lately I've been buying Costco's house brand.

I was just thinking about asking a cousin if she still prefers Miracle Whip after being raised without mayo in the house. I tolerated M.W. when I visited there but would never buy it.

They only share similar color and similar consistency but they are nothing alike in flavor.

I do like ""sandwich spread"" once in awhile but it is more of a mayo base with relish.

I'd posted this on another thread not long ago:

I'm hesitant to discuss mayonnaise. I remember the only fight my mother and stepfather ever had was over mayonnaise. I think they were at the grocery store and my stepfather picked up the wrong brand.

Years later I mentioned this to Better-half and then made the mistake of making what I thought was a completely benign comment:

""We were a Miracle Whip family.""

He took it as an insult to him and all his ancestors and it got ugly.

Be very careful discussing brands. It's like politics and religion.

When everybody was home and to satisfy everyone, I had to have a bottle of each in the refrigerator. Now, I have learned to live without and don't even have one bottle of mayo in the fridge! If I want to use something of that type, I use a Ranch/Jalapeno dressing. ! It is really good on veggies - creamy but with a bite! Because of calories, I use very little, but it does the trick!

I like both and don't consider them interchangeable. They are two completely different tastes, although the consistency is similar, e.g., I would make cole slaw with Miracle Whip, and tuna salad and egg salad with Hellman's.

However, I do think Miracle Whip is not as bad for you as Hellman's, as it's not made with the yolk of the egg. Back in the day, Hellman's TV commercial always stated that "Hellman's is so good in many ways, 'cause Hellman's is the whole egg mayonnaise." They don't advertise it that way anymore.

Mayonnaise is always listed as one of the worst foods one can eat, but I make either egg salad or tuna salad once a week. I try to keep the mayo down to one tablespoon.

Same here. For tuna and egg and olive, I don't use much mayo; potato salad's another thing, though. DH wouldn' know how to act without mayo in the house--he spreads it on everything.

He should be careful. A friend of mine's husband was a mayo addict. He put it on everything too, and he died of a massive heart attack at the age of 42. He was a small, thin man, so nothing to do with obesity. His doctor attributed it to the mayo.

Tell me about it. DH loves the stuff, and you're right about it having nothing to do with obesity. DH definitely may be an example of TOFI: thin-outside-fat-inside.
