What? You mean they want you to watch a bridal shower on Skype and send a gift in advance to be opened during the shower on Skype?

Depends on the circumstances. Many years ago, before SKYPE, my cousin was having a baby. She lived in a far away state and we wanted to have a shower for her but nobody could travel there and she couldn't come here.

So, we had the shower at a distance. SKYPE would have been GREAT for that.

They actually want the people to gather in one place (send the gifts to the person in advance so they open them from another state -) and the guests watch from there -

If it's a traditional shower with guests, but they Skype it for those who are out of town and cannot be there, I see no problem with that. However, if the idea is to save money and effort by not providing a location with snacks, beverages, decorations, a cake, etc., then I think it is very tacky.

I think it depends on the reason. If the honoree is initiating it to keep the actual guest list down or something, that's pretty tacky.

Well, that's not so bad, I guess.

My first thought was, "Are you kidding me?!?" I've never heard of a Skyped shower.

I had not heard of this, but then I am probably behind the times a bit as to social media type stuff.

Whatever works for them is none of my business. Maybe her friends live all over the country or something. Or maybe it's a last-minute wedding thing - well, it could be pretty much anything but, again, it's not for me to judge.

It might not be what I would do - or it might be what I WOULD do. But either way, party on.

distance -and possibly the expense that goes with it...she is pregnant but is flying somewhere else the same week so it can't be because she can't fly...

As long as the absent guest of honor isn't the one who suggested this, and it is her friends who want to do it for her, it seems fine.

Then it makes sense to do it that way.

Unfortunately this is the way of the world these days, so expect it to get worse before it gets better. I was surprised when asked to set up video interviews at work for candidates looking for a job. I thought, "You mean that you no longer interview in person?" How weird, but it's done all the time now. We pick the candidate up in the lobby and bring them to a video conference room where they sit in the room by themselves and interview with someone who lives in another part of the country.

I see nothing wrong with that. I mean, I wouldn't do it, but I can see why people who live far away from each other would set something like this up.

Are all the other people gathering somewhere to eat, celebrate, and play games. or are they just meeting to watch her open gifts?

I think it's nice if most of the giftee's family & friends are in another state. How about women with military spouses, or in the military themselves, who are far from home & expecting a child? That can be very lonely. I know because I used to work with the military for many years as a civilian employee.

Today's technology makes such things possible. Back in 1955, when Mom was expecting one of my sisters, her mom, sisters & friends from her hometown gave her a telephone shower. They sent her the gifts, then they all gathered at my grandmother's house to call Mom so she could have a nice, long chat with everyone. And those were the days when you had to pay extra for long-distance calls.
