I just heard that California Chrome has been given permission to run at Belmont with a nasal strip and that nasal strips will be allowed for anyone in the field. Someone here said that nasal strips are not permitted in NYS? They are actually legal in NYS. It's more of a ""house rule"" at Belmont.

And Espinosa was born to ride this horse. He just guides him to the lanes and when he gets ready...he gives the horse his head and lets him go. I have never seen him use the crop in either race I have watched. I also love this horses disposition. No temperament, no prancing and pulling. A real professional who loves what he does. He is a winner that I love to see win!

California Chrome is a good horse but whether he's a great horse remains to be seen. Truthfully his race times have been unremarkable and he hasn't had much serious competition. He picked a good year to try for the Triple Crown. There are no exceptional contenders.

It is well accepted that the times in the Derby were slow. It is also well documented that the times today were better for all the horses. Should CC have run at full speed to outrun horses that were not even keeping up with him? I think not.

I am rooting for him in the Triple Crown. Gooooo California Chrome and Mr. Espinosa!!!!!

Secretariat did - he finished 31 lengths ahead of his nearest competition in the Belmont Stakes in what was a world record time for a mile and a half. His record time for the Kentucky Derby still stands, 41 years later. Some horses just have that fire in them.

Edited to say: This does not mean I'm not rooting for him. He is a gorgeous chestnut CALIFORNIA bred trained by a trainer I am familiar with (through reading his name on raceday programs, not personally) and his story is the dream of anyone who has purchased or bred a racehorse at any level - absolute proof that with a good eye and A LOT of luck you too can have a Kentucky Derby winner and Triple Crown contender.

PS Just FYI - it is Espinoza

I don't think anyone would say that Seattle Slew wasn't a great horse, but I also think they'd have a problem naming three horses he beat along the way to his undefeated Triple Crown without looking it up on Google. Great horses, like great boxers, always make the competition look like a bunch of bums.

Incidentally, Slew was a bargain purchase too. I believe he went at auction for something on the near side of $35,000**. By the time he passed away it was estimated that he was worth over $100,000,000 as a stallion in his prime.

**Correction: Slew actually went for $17,500 at the yearling sales.

What a thrilling race, much closer than the Derby! I had not ever heard of this horse until recently, but wouldn't it be something if we finally had another Triple Crown winner?

I was thinking of my beloved sister the whole time throughout the Derby and the Preakness. She would have been so excited, jumping up and down. He's a beautiful horse and she loved her horses.

Her granddaughter just posted on her FB that she just lost her beloved horse, Razzie, yesterday. So sad. He was very old and broke his foot, and she had to put him down. She did it herself, as she is a vet. They are all devastated up there in Sussex County.
