Also, if there is food that could be dangerous to eat, the FDA will take action against that store.

A lot of people don't know that after you open lunchmeat, that it is only good for 7 days not the expiration date.

This is not about food but at the Dollar General stores, they throw away all the clothes hangers. I think this is such a waste. I go in to get the pants hangers. Perfect for pants or shorts that I don't want to put in the dryer.

Did they tell you why they throw them out? I think that's wasteful too.

The manager told me that all their clothes come in on hangers and they don't have the need for the other ones.

Do you know that your grocery stores can sell expired food? I sure didn't. Today, there was a lot of boxed food really cheap. All was expired. The manager informed me by law, they can sell expired food

Now I realize that some foods wouldn't hurt you but what about those that would make you sick.

How do you feel about this law by the FDA?

I use lots of food products beyond their sell-by date. That's not a use-by end date. Right now I'm 72 and I expect to make another 20 years or more following that same kind of choice. I wouldn't use a can that has swollen, a product that changed colors, and so forth, but otherwise, a few months beyond expiration for non-perishables doesn't concern me. I care more about dates on dairy products, frozen foods, meats, eggs - that type of product, but I don't see my grocery stores selling those beyond the sell-by date anyway.

BTW- when I first started to buy groceries, I don't think we had dates on much of anything. Certainly they were no big deal. Besides, what percentage of food poisoning comes because of expirations? I think almost none. Most poisoning come from improper handling well WITHIN expiration dates.

The grocery stores around here mark things that are expiring that day down by 40%-50% to sell the item. The expiration date is the last day that the store can have the food on the shelf, it doesn't mean the food instantly spoils that day. Depending on what it is, I'll buy multiples of the item & freeze them for future use. I've bought organic greens that were good for a week after their expiration date.

As long as it's identified as expired and meets code, I'm okay with it. However, I would never buy it. What drives me crazy is buying something and finding it has an old date. I return the item, but it honks me off that it was on the shelf in the first place. I try to be very thorough and check, but once and a while I miss.

I'm really careful now, on condiments...things like mayo, bbq sauce, and other bottled sauces. We don't go through these items quickly and I often buy the next jar, when we have a bit left in the old one. Sometimes, when I open up the new one, I see it's already very close to the exp. date.

the store I worked for would pay two dollars a product if you found it expired...there was a woman who made it her ""career"" to come in on a regular basis and check products to get the money....some nights she would get a goodly sum of money...

the owner said if his employees don't do their job to remove the expired products it was well worth the two dollar each for someone to do it....

not sure if he still does that...I have been retired for two years now...

When I'm shopping and notice that I have put something into my cart that is expired, I will bring it to someone's attention. Have seen expired food at Whole Foods such as Fage Yogurt (when I used to buy that), organic soup and also raisins.

Turn them in. You can call the luncheon meat companies, i.e. oscar meyers, etc and let them know their products are being sold very expired.

No way am I going to buy expired food to bring home to expire more, and go bad. I rarely use milk and some products, so if I buy expired or a few days until expiration no way, will I buy. It just goes bad!

I think it is irresponsible of the grocery clerk to tell you that, but even worse they do it. In our store I have seen things a day or 2 passed ex. date. It happens, but not as a rule. Most of the companies come in and pull their product, as they restock new. Not all the companies. Grocery store is in charge or rotation on most food.

On 5/14/2014 circles said:
the store I worked for would pay two dollars a product if you found it expired...there was a woman who made it her "career" to come in on a regular basis and check products to get the money....some nights she would get a goodly sum of money...

the owner said if his employees don't do their job to remove the expired products it was well worth the two dollar each for someone to do it....

not sure if he still does that...I have been retired for two years now...

I wish my local market would do that. I have to be very careful with what I buy there and it's a fancy-pants, rather pricey store
