This ""mass"" is a parody of the Catholic Mass. No amount of justification as to why those members want to do this can overshadow that fact.

Now that the Supreme Court has ruled that prayers are allowed at public meetings by any religion then the Satinists should be allowed to have their prayers.

mary: I don't think it's the pub so much as the issue of these ritual masses being a parody of Catholic masses.

Although satanism does not always recognize Satan himself (it predates Christianity and other religions), today it's been used to denigrate Christians, esp. Catholics.

Since these members are supposedly doing this for "educational" purposes, it would be interesting to see just what part of satanism they themselves "get" - the ancient concept or the modern one.

Harvard is not affiliated with any Religion, so all forms of expression should be allowed. The Boston Archdiocese has enough of its own problems to worry about without getting involved in this.

So.....how would you feel if they allowed a KKK rally on the quad? Is that A-OK with everybody?

Although I'm a lapsed, cafeteria Catholic, I don't think I would use "educational purposes" to describe the mockery this group will be engaging in. To me, it's totally disrespectful and offensive. OTOH, if it was a legitimate class being taught by a reputable Professor, it could be termed "educational" and the Archdiocese would probably not be as upset by this. JMO

KKK isn't a religion.

Linders said "all forms of expression should be allowed.".(a KKK rally would be a form of expression)....... Most people here are usually up in arms and want to prevent the Westboro Baptist folks from expressing their views......just wondering if those same folk feel the same about a Satanic Mass being said on the Harvard campus.

Agree about the mockery. That's my problem with this - it's not a class about the ancient beginnings of satanism or even how it evolved to the current parody. I could understand that being "educational". But what, exactly are these participants trying to "educate" others? That mass isn't all that encompasses satanism. My feeling is that they are not quite "educated" themselves about the whole concept.

Although the Archdiocese has the right to speak out against it, I'm pretty sure it will not hold much sway overall.
