What Are You Reading --- May 2014

This book thread is started on the first of each month.

Some suggestions for posting here:

~ underline, bold or CAPITALIZE the name of the book you're reading - it makes it easier for us readers to see what it is

~ include the author of the book - there are so many books with the same title (if you are recommending a book we want to make sure we read the right one)

~ post a few words about the book - would you recommend it or not

~ tell us the book genre - is it mystery, romance, historical, biography, etc.

***There is no obligation to do any of the above.

I'm still reading No One Left To Tell by Karen Rose. Just haven't had much time to read in the last couple weeks.

I am in the process of rereading Karen Rose's series. Just finished #1 Don't Tell and on to #2 Have You Seen Her? Loved the characters Grayson and Paige in the story you are reading. Her books have a lot of substance to them and are more than just a fluffy romance.

I am finishing up THE RAZOR'S EDGE by W. SOMERSET MAUGHAM.

I highly recommend this novel!!

I don't want to give anything away by telling too much but it is beautifully written and a joy to read - so much so that I am savoring every page and not looking forward to its end!

Maugham tells the story of an American WWl vet who is traumatized by his war experiences and goes on a search for the meaning of life. Maugham cleverly inserts himself into the story as an old friend of one of the main characters. There is romance, jealousy, and wit. His characters really come to life.

My simple recommendation - read it!!

I finished ONE THOUSAND WHITE WOMEN and just picked up INSOMNIAC'S recommendation of THE STORIED LIFE OF A.J. FIKRY by Gabrielle Zevin. As a book lover, I figured I couldn't go wrong with a book about the love of books!! Can't wait to cozy up with this one!

It was a wild ride! I've never read anything like it! I liked the way the author set it up. It made it feel like it was a true event.

Surely you've seen the movie. Gene Tierney and Tyrone Power. Fabulous movie-I'm sure the book is, too, but it's too late for me to read the book. I do watch the movie periodically.

Happy May everyone.

I finished AmyTan's Valley of Amazement and really enjoyed it. Not much of a historical book reader (early 1900's then back to 1897 in some places) but love her books. It did take me 2 and 1/2 wks since it was over 900 pages in large print but didn't seem that long since it was fast reading.

Going to read Peyton Place by Grace Metalious next. Has been on my shelf forever and it's edition date is 1956 (before I was born of course ). Unfortunately, it's not a first edition; if it was it'd probably be worth something. Don't know why I haven't read it yet; probably because I've been too busy reading my library books and I just renewed them all for 3 wks and have time to read one of my own.

I just finished My Notorious Life written by Kate Manning.

It was an interesting book about an Irish orphan who set herself up as a ""female physician"" in late 1800's in New York. Eye opener about how women were treated at that time in history.

I finished THE STORIED LIFE OF A.J. FIKRY and thoroughly enjoyed it! A book centered around a book store owner who loves books. Good story!

It was also made into a movie in the mid-eighties starring Bill Murray.

Going to the library this morning to pick up The Other Typist by Suzanne Rindell. I've been wanting to read this for quite some time but the wait list at the library was putting me off. Finally, it's mine! I'm really looking forward to it.

Hi everyone, I'm still around although I haven't posted here in quite a while, I know. Lots going on in my life.

I will post again with my list in front of me so I can tell you everything I've been reading. However, I will say that I've now read every single Kent Haruf book he's written, and he's become one of my very favorite authors! I can't say enough good things about his books. I wish he'd hurry and write another one because there are no more left for me to read.

I will go back and read the thread from April plus the posts on this month's discussion. I know there will be books I'll want to read after hearing your praises.

I hope everyone is doing well and enjoying the beginning of the warmer weather.

I just finished The Wolf Gift by Anne Rice, I am now reading The Wolves of Mid-Winter by Anne Rice.

I like books, there is a lot of description in the book, mostly about the way the rooms look. I sometimes skim that part to get back to the story.

The Wolf Gift tells the story of how he became a man wolf, The Wolves of Mid-Winter is about how the wolves spend Christmas. I just started this book, it also is wrapping up questions about the last book.

Last week I read Carnal Curiosity by Stuart Woods. It is his latest book in the Stone Barrington series. I liked it and recommend it. Yes, there was too much dated old playboy s*x, but the plot was engaging and a little more complex than some of his recent books. I love the way this author writes. The pacing and use of dialogue are excellent.

Now I am reading Driftless by David Rhodes for my book club. It is better than expected.

I just finished Eleanor and Park, a YA fiction by Rainbow Rowell. This book has mostly 4 and 5 star reviews on LibraryThing. It was only a pretty solid 3 stars from me, but I was not as enamored as everyone else.

Before that I read The Way the Crow Flies, Anne-Marie McDonald, which I can't recommend highly enough. Fabulous!

Next up is Sarah Addison Allen's latest, Lost Lake. I've enjoyed all her previous whimsical magical books.

And I have to say I wholeheartedly agree with Sunny about all Kent Haruf's books. One of my favorite authors as well.

Its May already??? I haven't been on here lately, seems like so much is going on with me.

I finished the Anchor Island series by Teri Osburn. Enjoyed it, very light reading.

Also finished The Way Life Should Be by Christina Baker Kline. I liked this one because of the Italian cooking and family aspect. This author also wrote Orphan Train which I thought was a great book.

Finished Vintage: A Novel by Susan Gloss and enjoyed reading about the vintage clothes and the lives of the 3 women in it.

Now reading Two Sisters by Mary Hogan. Good so far.

Finished a few older books. One from Tami Hoag and another from Susan Elizabeth Phillips. A current one I finished is STILL with BREAD CRUMBS by ANNA QUINDLEN. I enjoyed all 3 very much. As I discover new authors, I try to start at the beginning. It seems I'm always playing catch up as the list goes longer especially getting suggestions here. It lets me read books that I'm not normally drawn to. Thank you Lainey for starting this thread every month.
