I'm thinking of my mother and she wasn't invisible, for sure. People always loved being around my mother.

Well when I go shopping the salespeople just don't seem to see me anymore. It doesn't bother me unless I really do want to be waited on. They just kinda look right through me.

I prefer those. The ones I don't like are the ones that follow you around and suggest stuff that isn't even close to what you are looking for. Kind of like car salesmen.

We are what I call "Cellophane People."

Try this: Go to a multiplex theater. Buy a ticket for a movie. Go in, watch the movie, leave and switch to another movie when it's over, and another one when that one's over. Do that all day long, and those 16 year-old ushers will never even see you. If they say something, mutter something about looking for the bathroom.

I've never done this but I've wanted to as an experiment

Ah, I see. Thank you. Supposedly that's pretty common with seniors. It is said doctors and waiters talk to the younger person with the older person.

I believe we can make ourselves visible, or at least speak up if someone is overlooking us. I remember having to do that in markets, especially the meat counter, because I am not a tall person (that's putting it nicely )

It's a little like just blending into the background. Too old to turn heads the way we did at 25, too young to get the respect older women get. Being ignored at the counter in a store, being looked past when awaiting a table in a restaurant, & so forth. Yes, you do learn that you have to speak up, ask for assistance at the store, tell the seating host/hostess that you were there first, etc. Some people just have the kind of personalities that demand attention from the day they're born until the day they die. The rest of us who were raised to act like ladies, wait our turn, don't talk loudly, & don't be aggressive just disappear in our world today. Oh, please, I'm not feeling sorry for myself & not asking for pity. I'm just relating how my life changed around the time I turned 40. Now I'm 66 & have learned how to deal with being ignored. I've also learned that sometimes having a low profile isn't so bad.

I see nothing unladylike about stepping up to a counter, smiling broadly and saying good morning to the sales associate. You will get service and likely it will be good service. That's what men do and there is nothing aggressive about it.

Salespeople are overworked, underpaid and stretched too thin.

They aren't very helpful to anyone, in my experience in retail stores.

Just smile, say hi - how are you doing today? - and ask nicely - IF you can find one!!!!

This always works for me. Let them know you are ready to do business.
