Did you have a favorite book/story as a child?

I made myself memorize the title and author I loved the story so much. Helen Fuller Orton wrote "Grandmother's Cookie Jar". When I read that I was old enough to go get my own books at the library and have my own card. I'm sure I was elementary school age though. Did you have a favorite story?

Or did your kids always want a certain book read to them?

Yes, I must have read Little Women dozens of times. I also enjoyed the 5 Little Peppers series of books (can't remember the author). My mother, an avid reader & book club(s) member, took us to the public library every couple of weeks & also joined a childrens book club. So we had new reading material all the time. From the book club, I recall enjoying David & the Phoenix & TV Humphrey. I also read a couple of Mom's childhood favorites, also written by Louisa May Alcott: Rose in Bloom & Eight Cousins. I didn't much like boys at the time, so didn't read Little Men.

i was a big fan of the nancy drew series and still have many of my hardback books. every time we went out i begged my mom to buy me one. then i would finish it in a day or two and then start begging again.

Magic Garden and Secret Garden were two favorites. Any Enid Blyton book. Way too many favorites to name.

I mentioned Charlotte's Web in my earlier reply, but when you mentioned Nancy Drew, how could I have forgotten? Charlotte's Web was my favorite when I was really young, but once I got to school it was Nancy Drew all the way. In fact, my fourth grade teacher told my parents that she was worried that I was reading too much! LOL. They were wonderful and very suspenseful for my younger self.

"The Black Stallion" by Walter Farley.

LOVE, LOVE, LOVE the pictures in the book....so that would tell you I was beside myself when the movie came out when I was older. Stunning imagery...the movie was a beautiful compliment to my memories of the book.

Five Little Peppers and How They Grew, The Boxcar Children, and The Bobbsey Twins series. I loved to read as a child and during the course of a school year, I usually read the majority of the books available in the bookcase in my classroom. I was always one of the top readers in my class.

When I was little I remember mama reading "Heidi" to me. I enjoyed it a lot.

My kids liked the "If you give a Moose a Cookie" etc. series, and "The Napping House and a couple of cute Sesame street ones when they were really little.

When I got a little older I loved Boxcar Children. Only the original tho.

oh.....and i almost forgot the MISTY series, including MISTY OF CHINCOTEAGUE.

when my kids were younger they LOVED the ARTHUR series, GERONIMO STILTON series, GOODNIGHT MOON, WHERE THE WILD THINGS ARE, HAROLD AND THE PURPLE CRAYON.....and a lot more!

i loved when qvc had those book TSVs usually around the holidays. i would usually buy two sets of books. one set to give to the kids and one set to break up and give as gifts. i am surprised they dont do this anymore. they were a great deal.

LOL, in the summertime when i was in my room reading my dad would tell me to stop and get outside to get some fresh air and sunshine.

I loved so many books while I was growing up. Black Beauty, Heidi, Little Women and Little Men, 5 Little Peppers, Bobbsey Twins and many others.

_Alice in Wonderland_ made me a booklover for life.

I also loved a series with the initial words "A Little Maid of ..." in every title. Was it Alice Turner Curtis? She wrote a long time before my childhood, but her books were in the library we went to twice a week. I grew up in New England and most of those stories were set in the Boston area, where I lived.

I also loved an early sf-for-kids series about the "Mushroom Planet." Eleanor Cameron, I think.

My childhood was spent in the local library. I've always been a bookworm.

My favorite story is ""The Tortoise and the Hare."" The lesson has always been applicable in my everyday life. Books by Dr. Seuss were a fun introduction to rhyming and piqued my interest in writing verse.
