Widows or other ladies that live alone -- what do you do to fill your time? I always have household chores, paperwork, etc., but find times very lonely. This weekend all the "single" ladies I talk to on the phone are all busy. Evenings are so lonely. I don't do crafts, puzzles, etc. I know I should read more and plan to do that. (widow--1 year)

Hi Daysdee I'm also a widow of almost 3 years. I have a disability that makes walking difficult for me so I usually work on my computer, do crossword and word puzzles, talk on the phone etc. I do get lonely but I have a wonderful family who keeps in touch with me every day and that helps a lot. I hope things work out for you. If you need someone to talk to I'm here.

I don't do puzzles, etc. I was going for daily walks and will resume as soon as I finish recuperation from surgery. I have been rather homebound for many weeks. My family is great and do keep in touch every day too. I don't have brothers or sisters, but I do have several "lady friends" that I speak with on the phone and meet for lunch at times. Some are widows and some are married. They are all friends that don't know each other so I meet with them individually. Haven't been able to do it for several weeks though. Wasn't able to drive, but now I'm back to driving so that helps to get out. Thanks for your post. It helps to talk to someone in a similar situation.

I wish you well in your recovery!

When you're better is there a "Y" near you? YMCA or YWCA? How about taking a class or joining a local rec center for fitness? Many classes are geared to age or fitness level at very low cost.

Library to check out a local book club. Do they have one that has discussions? How about a flower/garden club since you already have a garden?

If you are a senior, any day trips by motorcoach that are reasonable and get you back home by evening?

Possibilities are endless!

How about calling a girlfriend to go out shopping or to eat with? Do you have a girlfriend who is also a widow? I have a friend who was widowed at only 54 yr old - she couldn't take the evenings alone so she got a job working evenings.

I was widowed at age 30 but I was so busy trying to make ends meet after my husband died that I did not have a moment spare to even think about being lonely, plus I had his teenage kids to keep me company. (he was previously divorced and had custody). Also, I moved into a family home with my brother and his family right next door and my grandparents upstairs. To say the least, my life was much too busy and complicated at that time for me to have any time to do anything but struggle to keep going. I was often angry at him for dying and leaving me in this mess - often while I was waiting out in the freezing cold for the bus because I could not afford a car.

They say time heals anything so ... Good luck.

PS - I agree the YMCA is a wonderful resource not just for fitness but for a place to take some classes and make some friends. Or to see friends you already have. DH and I go to the Y to work out or swim almost every day.

Another PS - my neighbor across the street is a very recent widow - last evening just before dinner time she came over with a bottle of wine and 3 glasses - she said she was lonely sitting there by herself so we all sat around and had some wine then she stayed for dinner and actually stayed til after the 10PM news. we chatted, watched TV and laughed and cried a little together. So, buy some wine, chill it, and tomorrow evening go over your neighbor's house.

I'm a retired nurse and I volunteer at the hospital where I help in the kitchen getting trays set up then passed out. if anyone needs fed the nurses tell me and I feed them. I have made some great friends there. this is a small town - I run into patients i have delivered trays to all the time - they remember me and come over to say hello and chat. I also volunteer at my church's food bank, and have made a couple good friends there.

I crochet, read, walk, garden, volunteer at the spay/neuter clinic, day trips, kayak, off road in my side by side, ride my horse, yard sale, go to Farmer's markets. Everything I couldn't do much of before I retired. I am so busy I literally fall into bed at night.
