Anyone else feel Lost in translation?

By Lost in translation I mean TEXTING. I just told my (grown) children I MISS old fashioned interaction.

They text me all the time (which Im glad they love me and keep in contact with me a lot) BUT I missed important messages tonight about how long to watch my grandkids Sat (longer than I thought, which is fine but now DH and I have to change some plans etc. we never would have made had I known we are going to have them longer than originally stated). AND I missed a message to call my 14 yr old granddaughter (and it was important and now shes in bed).

I know this is what everyone does now days, but I told them I cant be on here 24/7. ..lol..(I have a prepaid cell and its OFF unless I use it and I rarely use it, so they text to my email).

I said please CALL ME, if its important, that Im tired of typing for hours some days, and also things getting mixed up like Lost in translation (and when texting you cant type paragraphs so its non stop typing to explain things!).

They said ok Mom. I also wrote my granddaughter that Im sorry I wasn't online and she can call me tomorrow anytime or anytime at all. (Im home most days).

Lastly- my friend also texted me this whole story which doesn't make sense in texts. lol. I said I will call her tomorrow by PHONE! lol.

I feel your pain. I have missed important information as well from texts that never made it to my phone. Just call for crying out loud!

exactly! I hate this texting business. oldest child still uses the phone to talk. youngest wont bother answering unless it is a text. It doesn't matter how often I tell him that if he wants to give us a message to call. We don't sit on our phones. We have a house phone and two cells. when we come in the house we dump the cells on the kitchen table and might check them once or twice a night.

I remember the Pastor's assistant telling him that someone had sent an e-mail regarding the Last Rites for a loved one---they told me people do that all the time expecting Father to be sitting at his computer all day and night---the regular telephone is still so useful--

I don't text and the people I know don't text me. The only time I have my cell with me is when I am out of the house for emergencies only. Want to call me, call the house phone and if I'm not home leave a message on the answering machine. Technology is fine but I won't let it run my life and I'm not missing anything.

I have a cell phone, but it's an old fashioned flip phone. I use it for calls only. The buttons are too small for me to text, and besides, I refuse to use "shorthand".

I don't blame you! I guess I would just stop texting or answering their texts until they get the message, that they should call you.

I don't mind texting or e-mailing....but if its real important...best to call me on the phone...most days and nights I will be on my Tablet playing Solitaire....not reading messages....

My phone does not do texting so if someone one wants to talk to me they have to call. I have a dumb phone with no bells or whistles, I just don't want to pay anymore than I have to for phone service.

I mostly text, very rarely email, but I will call if it's important or I don't think the person will answer the text right away.

Count me among the "non-texters". I keep thinking of getting a "smart" phone. But I really don't want to be tethered to a phone 24/7. As it stands right now, those who know me (or are likely to want to get in touch with me), know I don't text, so they call, if important. Otherwise, e-mail.

I have never texted (wouldn't know how to) and have never received a text, except from my cell phone company, which I promptly delete. I won't communicate that way. I don't know why but I think it's rude, like someone doesn't have the time or consideration to give me a complete sentence or talk to me in person. Sometimes I wonder if communication like this will cause our brains to evolve (or devolve?) into something else in the future.

So many have their phones in their hands constantly that they wouldn't think that someone might not be carrying around their phone 24/7. I've told my family, too, you need to actually call so that we can talk.

Years ago I said NEVER about texting...now that is all I do..I went with the flow NOT to miss out communication with my kids..and I love it..so easy to shoot off a simple text..in touch with my father in another state often..and my sisters too!!

Splurge on a new phone and if you can't beat them join them! You know the grandkids are not going to do things your way or the old fashion way..and if you don't to miss out..then upgrade your phone and do it lol..

I love being on the road with work picking up my phone and seeing a message from one of my kids or a pic of the grandchild..

Standing your ground and refusing to text will only result in losing out on great communication in life..sure it shouldn't be...but it isn't going to change..so pick your battles and be the cool texting grandma lol!

Seriously upgrade your phone and you will have so much communication with the grandkids etc..I wouldn't miss it for the world these days.

My kids know not to text me for I've asked them not to and they respect my wishes as they actually call me if they have have something to tell me.

I have never sent nor received a text. If it's important my family and friends know they need to call me. If it is just general information for a future date, an email is fine.

Well, don't come here boohing because you kids and grandkids never call you. When you tell someone not to text you, you are essentially saying "don't call me unless somone died". Because texting is the number one form of communication for younger people. You might not like it but that's the way it is. I can't even imagine the circumstances under which I would tell somone I loved "don't call me". Unbelievable.

I don't need to know every time my kids let a poot nor am I boohooing. BTW you are contradicting yourself. Nobody said "don't call me". I am sorry the young people in your life don't respect you.

I turn my cell phone on at 9pm, turn it off in the morning. It's turned on again when I leave the house. When I turn it on at night I've learned to look to see if I have a text or phone message. I am not glued to my cell phone all day long. The volume is turned off overnight. I do check my email several times a day and one last time on the phone.

But I have also told family/friends to use the house phone first. If they leave a message on my cell phone I probably won't see it until 9pm. They don't listen very well. If they call the house and there is no answer, leave a message. That gets checked all the time.....

Again, I'm not glued to the cell phone. I have texted, special circumstances, but it's not comfortable.

One business tried to insist that they needed my cell phone number. I refused. My cell phone is for my convenience, not theirs.

How does texting translate to respect? It's just another form of communication.
