I always check my bank account before shredding any receipts to make sure the amount is correct. I also watch the register. Maybe hubby forgot something. I've had a debit card since they became available & use it for just about everything. Never had a problem or wrong amount.

Thought I'd just share an incident that happened to DH.

I was reviewing our checking account and came across a withdrawal from our checking account from a grocery store that looked excessive. My husband had gone shopping to pick up fish and some other items and used his debit card for payment. I asked him if he did a cash withdrawal in addition to paying for the groceries. He said No. I asked him do you happened to still have the receipt laying around, he said No.

Well something went wrong somewhere because I estimate the withdrawal was for about 50 or more dollars over what he spent. I don't know if the cashier made the mistake and he wasn't paying attention to what he authorized, or if the machine malfunctioned and added another's shoppers items to our bill, or if our bank made an error.

I don't even know where to start to unravel this, as it was 10 days ago. May have to chalk it up to a learning experience, and to always hold onto receipts until the payment hits the bank account.

Without that receipt, there isn't much you can do to try to figure out what happened. Yes, it's a hard lesson to learn, isn't it? I got into the habit of checking my account every day, mostly because it's pretty quick & easy to do. My card got hacked last year & even though I got the money back, it was a hassle that I'd rather not go through again.

I don't have a debit card because my financial advisor advises against it and it isn't recommended at about every place where I would use one but when I did have one I could call and find out what my last purchases were. I could go through the purchases on the phone (or computer) and it would say if I got cash back. It won't itemize the bill but it will tell you if you got cash back.

Another thing that bugs me is when food places (like Culver's) don't line item their receipts with a price per item. I often have orders of 6-8 burgers (or sandwiches) plus fries, etc. and though I usually know a ballpark figure there is no way to tell exactly what I'm being charged for each. They could easily be adding $5-$10 to the total without ever being found out.

I check my bank account at least a few times per day too.

I had a strange thing happen at a grocery store a few weeks ago. I was using my Discover card & the total was around $35. I ran my card through the credit card reader & it asked me to verify the amount which was $30 more than my total. When I questioned the clerk he quickly hit some buttons on the register & cancelled the transaction. I ran my card again & the total was correct. I got to thinking about it later & I think he must have hit $30 cash back. Since it was a credit card & not debit it wouldn't have worked anyhow. I really think he intended to take that cash back for himself. I wonder if I should have said something to the manager. I can't remember his name & I haven't seen him in there again. Always double check the receipts before you leave the register.

Try going back to the store to see if they can look at their accounting records for the day. I am sure your financial statement has information about the time of transaction and location. The store can use that information to look at the records of receipts for the day. If it was a cash withdrawal, or cashier charged someone else's order to yours, it will be hard to prove it wasn't processed by you. I always take a quick scam of the receipt before I leave the store, just to check for no crazy charges added. Good luck.

I am the OP. I called my card issuer just to see what they recommended (my financial institution was closed). They said to call my bank and see if they could request a retrieval of the receipt. So I will do that tomorrow. My bank (credit union) can sometimes be a little hokey about these things, but I will push. I also plan on calling the grocery store to see what their records may reflect.

Lesson learned for sure. All future receipts are going to be placed in an envelope from now on. Funny today, DH used the card and handed me the receipt when he came home.

I know I have done this at Target and other stores if I lose my receipt or forget to bring it with me. I have never tried it at a grocery store though. Do you do internet banking? You should be able to go online and look at your purchases. It probably won't give you an itemized bill but just give you the totals from the visit to the store.

If you have the Advantage Card you can look online at your purchases and total.
