Malaysian missing plane

I have lost track on this story. Did they positively identify the 'pings' as belonging to this missing plane?? Last I heard, they 'presumed' it was from the plane. Plus, I heard that it would be a long time to even attempt any type of recovery effort since the ocean was so deep in that area. Also, to my knowledge, they have never positively identified any debris. If I do an internet search, I get contradictory info. If anyone has more information than I do, please let me know. TIA

If I was a family member, I would really want some solid information. It's so sorry for those people.

CNN basically has the same info as they've been spouting all week. They have a 'high degree of confidence' that the pings are from the flight. They've changed their story several times. Like I said, nothing positive-no real evidence.

Lacey, They heard pings on Thursday but they were fainter. They want to pinpoint the area more closely as the unmanned sub has to work very slowly.

The problem is that they have found no wreckage as yet. I don't think they will confirm anything except "this is compatible with an airline black box ping" until they find some wreckage.

They don't intend to send in the sub until they stop hearing pings, because the pings have already reduced the search area a lot. But it is still very big.

I don't follow CNN so maybe you already know this. Sounds to me as if they are encouraged by multiple confirmations of pings on an airline frequency. They are still not sure they will find the wreckage, though. And the pings are fainter than they were. If they are from the airplane, the batteries are about scheduled to stop working.

CNN isn't my first go-to any more. They no longer check anything before broadcasting it, and half of what they rush to put out is bogus. They're starting to look more like World Net Daily than real news. They've lost the plot over the last year or two.

That's the way I took it, you were not addressing Lacey, but the first reply and I agree with you 100%. I don't understand it myself...is there just no human kindness in the world for some?

It's impossible to be absolutely certain the pings came from the missing aircraft until the boxes are recovered and their serial numbers are checked. Given that there are no other aircraft with black boxes with pingers missing in the area, it's reasonable to assume the pings are from the Malaysian Air plane, but the authorities won't be able to absolutely say they are from the Malaysian Air plane until the wreckage has been positively identified.

As to debris, any floating debris is likely hundreds (possibly thousands) of miles away by now due to the ocean currents. That debris spotted earlier on the satellite images was reportedly likely to have originated from the area where they're now searching and drifted to where it was spotted on satellite due to ocean currents. You wont find any floating debris now in the area of the pings which is where the searchers are now focused because the currents would have carried it away. They'll only find submerged debris when they've used the deep sea submersibles and find the wreckage.

I have this fear that they abandoned the southern search area too quickly and ignored the satellite images once they heard the pings. If there were any survivors of the crash (highly unlikely but you never know) then they'd be floating with the debris and there was some large debris spotted. I'd hate to have them find the bodies of some who survived the crash and floated on the debris before succumbing to dehydration. That would be extraordinarily tough for the families. I would have liked to have seen them investigate those debris fields in addition to the pings.

Gardenman. It is frightening to think that they missed possible survivors. There was so much confusion about the search. I also think that knowing what the speeds/directions of the currents could maybe give them a better idea where possible debris could have gone. As frustrating as this is to us, it must be madness for the families and loved ones.

None of the news outlets have definitive details. It seems to me, after all the changes to information released by various "officials," the only solid facts are that Malaysia Airlines flight 370 disappeared and they know who was listed on the plane's manifest of passengers and crew. I've been impressed by the quality of the experts in the panels on CNN. However, after watching for a while, there's nothing of substance for them to add and the speculation has gotten tedious and frustrating, imo.

Even if the pings are from the plane, remember how much time has passed. It disappeared on March 8. Had there been floating debris in that churning ocean, the violent storms and strong currents would have carried it off in so many directions for so many miles... I doubt there would be anything in close proximity to the actual plane by now.

Well, earlier today, a US Official was said to have commented that the pings were definitely from a plane (CNN).

Now, if the boxes are recovered, do any of you really believe that they will immediately disclose that. I don't think so because then they would be the property of the Maylays and we know we would never know the truth. I think that when we recover the items, we will quietly learn what really happened, announce the findings, and return the boxes to the Maylays. My take.

There is an interesting story on Page 1 of the MSN website today. Investigators with a Malaysian newspaper are reporting that the co-pilot made a phone call during the flight, at a time when the plane was flying low enough to receive cell phone service. They did not reveal who received this phone call. Malaysian officials are denying that this happened. I'm sure we will hear more about this in the days to come.

Recovering the box(es) isn't really going to tell anything. They only record 2 hours worth of data, then start to record over itself, only leaving a total of two hours of data. The plane traveled longer than 2 hours after it lost contact with anyone. So I am not sure what will be on it that will tell anyone what happened.

Even if they find the plane, we will never really know what happened.

The VOICE recorder only records two hours.

The DATA recorder records the whole flight.

Two different boxes that record two different things.
