HAM: The Master Cut... What is it?

DH and I made a pilgrimage to Costco today in search of a good ham and other Easter items.

If they had much in the way of Easter baskets or eggs, it's long gone in our area. I had to agree with DH, Costco was worse today than on a Saturday. A fight broke out over parking spaces right in front of us and someone sent in the security forces.

I was hoping to find a ham that wasn't spiral cut, but they all were except for something called a Master Cut. It's a big slab (no bone) and comes with a side of current jelly glaze. We agreed it would be easier to slice.

Has anyone tried this before?

ps There's a lot available for Passover. I got the pastrami (best I'd ever seen) and a Matzo Apple Kugel.

I prefer bone in ham myself. However, I have never tried the Master Cut.

LOL! Yup, it's me. I decided to change to scottie since thats what I go by anyway.

eta: I had to put in an extra t because someone else already had scottie.

I did a Bing search on what is a "master cut" ham and the first return was this thread!!!

The only other reference I found to "master cut" was part of a brand name.

I found the most marvelous ham at Costco. I had the usual spiral, half ham in my cart, but when I turned the corner, I found Kirkland Master Carve, applewood smoked, fully cooked, boned ham. It has a flatish shape, which allows beautifil slices, and is the best tasting ham I have ever eaten. It is more nearly like a fresh ham, but with a slightly smokey flavor, very light in color when sliced, not the red color in other hams, ten pounds for $27.+ It came with two large packages of red current glaze, one for glazing, one for servind on the side, which was delicious. I normally make my own glaze, but this was great. It does not have the usual hard rind on the top, so the top is edible. I will be freezing slices and chunks, for sandwiches and casseroles. I plan to get another for Easter.

It does look good! I like the idea of easy slicing. The first spiral we had was a long time ago and I didn't know you were supposed to tie it together or cook it face down.

It was dry and like shoe leather

DH loves Spiral Cut ham...I'll have to show him "The Master Cut". He'll probably ask me to get that, to try.

I'm glad I got one to try, especially after seeing that glowing review. I'd imagine it keeps quite awhile unopened.
