Windows XP

I just heard on the news that as of midnight tonight, Microsoft will no longer be giving support or security updates for Windows XP users. Windows XP was born about 12 years ago & several newer versions have come about since. Can anyone tell me which came first: Windows XP or Windows 7. My computer is getting old (Windows 7) but still works good. I am wondering if I will lose my security updates, as well. Anyone know?

XP came out before 7. If you have 7 you are fine.

You should be fine with Windows 7 for quite a while if MS holds true to form. There is only one full newer version.

The new Windows will be similar to Windows 7. I like it! DH upgraded our computer from XP to Win 7 in December, since many shopping websites didn't support XP anymore...

I posted about this last week. I thought we had Windows XP yet. I was WRONG. We have Windows 7. I think Windows and Apple should stand by their products more no matter what. Period.

if you have XP, you should probably get a new computer. XP is really old and therefore, your computer is also really old. If you are computer savvy, you might want to upgrade it and see what happens. It might be your computer cannot handle windows 7 or 8, because it is not powerful enough.

OR you can just roll the dice & do nothing and once your computer dies or gets a virus, you then get a new computer.

well, that is like saying the Beta max makers should stand behind their products more.

XP is really old. REALLY old and other software that may run on it probably has lost their support as well.

There comes a time when the product is just too old and it isn't worth spit to try and keep it upgraded. Computers are pretty inexpensive now and people should be upgrading every few years or so. We do that with other things, but for some reason, computers are supposed to last decades? I cannot even imagine having the computers I had back in the 1990's and Win XP came out in early 2000's. So, that is 14 years ago. And that is when it was made available to the public. The development for XP began in the late 1990's.

Thanks! One other question I have. If you do banking with XP and stop banking is it safe to still use the computer for other things or should I just retire it altogether?

I have a laptop but I also still use my desktop with XP because there is nothing wrong with it even though it is slow it's reliable.

you can do things that are insecure on the web - meaning nothing that requires an account for you to log into.

If you want to keep it for off line purposes - such as word or excel spreadsheets, that kind of thing, you can, but remember that the versions of those products are also expired as well. It may be that you won't even be able to convert them to a newer version if it is a very old version.
